What a letdown April 15, 2008

I read Labyrinth a couple of years ago and thought it was a great holiday read, not as good as you'd expect from the article raving about it in the Observer, but good all the same. This one, howevever - what a disappointment. Especially since it showed such promise, the ingredients of Tarot, Debussy, big old haunted English country house, ladies in corsets and treasure hunts - sounded so good in theory but just failed miserably on the page. The modern day plot just seemed like a convenient add on to the turn of the century plot, Uncle Julian was a ridiculous villain, Meredith and Hal seemed to have come straight from one of those romantic books for girls in their early teens, "He ran a hand through his thick wavy hair" etc etc. The other plot with Leonie and Anatole started well but finished badly with its ludicrous climax in the sepulchre where all the spirits rise up from the cards and do their worst. It was all just so... silly and disappointing, esp since i love a good old Victorian melodrama, but compare this to something like Fingersmith, just doesn't come near it. Or the Time Travellers Wife or even Nina Beachcroft's Cold Christmas, which I read as a child and haunted me for years! It all seemed very contrived and rather like a GCSCE English Language essay. I wish someone else could have taken the ingredients and had a proper go at this, seems a bit too much like Kate Mosse plotted the story on her lunchbreak in between Neighbours and Countdown.

A Good Read April 13, 2008
Read Labyrinth which was a good read so when I heard this one was coming out, couldn't wait. Got it as a Christmas present and couldn't put it down. I thought it better then Labyrinth. Enjoyed the tarot aspect.

At first i admit i bought this book, relucantly, with no expectations. I've read another of her books and was not impressed. but when your in a country where there are hardly any english books you dont have much choice.

The plot is gripping and i could hardly put the book down, you end up falling for all of the characters as the plot thickens the snipits of ironic twists unfold and the past and present merge through a simple tarot deck that has been stainned with the blood of countless victims.

A book that you should read, you wont regret it.

Having read and enjoyed Labyrinth I'm SO disappointed. Not only with the plot and the language but most of all - all theese French and Latin phrases! Does Ms Mosse think all her readers are fluent in these languages?? I have put this book and Ms Mosse down for good.

Not a bad read ,but not brilliant either April 2, 2008
i found the beggining of the book very engaging ,however towards the end it got a little drawn out for a plot that became obvious to the outcome.I expected something different to her previous novel and became dissapointed when it was basically the same outcome and book with different characters and eara.
Saying that it would make a good novel to read inbetween your next more serios read when you want to wind down.
