Exquisite in darkness...and light November 3, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Anne Sudworth is such a talented artist. Her use of contrast between darkness and light brings such life to her paintings. This book is a remarkable collection of some of her best, elegantly presented and aptly titled "Gothic Fantasies". Truly inspiring, the works always spark my imagination, causing the unseen to become seen (or is it just me?). Hauntingly beautiful, the images are one moment dark and brooding, the next airy and ethereal. But they are always magical.
A magnificent work April 13, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Anne Sudworth is an artist of exceptional talent, and her work is haunting, magestic, mysterious and amazing. To be able to stand in front of one of her canvases is a truly exceptional experience, but those opportunities are all too rare. This book is really the next best thing. It is exceptionally well produced and is a pleasure to simply hold, let alone browse through.
Many of Anne's well known work is represented in the book in very high definition, and it is possible to spend hours just looking at individual pieces (I know, because I've done so!). However, the addition is in her own descriptions of pieces, or her choice of poetry or prose to match various pieces, making the whole experience even richer. I know this sounds rather overblown hyperbole, and it's not something I'm keen on, but this is a book that is really out of the ordinary, and does lead one down such literary alleyways.
If you enjoy art - good art, and if you hanker after the mysterious displayed visually, or just like looking at paintings and losing yourself in them, I can thoroughly commend this book to you. It is a perfect piece to accompany the work of a very special artist.
A truly beautiful showcase for an exceptional talent. January 19, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have had the fortune to see an advanced copy of this book...
There will never be any substitute for seeing a remarkable piece of art `in the flesh' so to speak (and if you ever get the opportunity to see an exhibition of Anne Sudworth's work I urge you to do so) but this book comes as close as I have ever seen to capturing the spirit and reproducing the detail of the real thing. Embodying the essence of the `Gothic', in the more traditional sense of the beautiful and romantic with a darker twist; this book entwines classical prose and poetry with extraordinary artwork. The presentation is sympathetically produced to complement the content and the reproductions themselves are of an outstanding quality. If you are an existing fan of Anne's work you will not be disappointed and for those who are new to this work - this is a stunning introduction to Anne's vision of haunting landscapes, imposing skies, beautiful ruins, standing stones and all manor of veiled and implied entities.
