5 out of 5 stars ammianus marcellinus reborn   August 23, 2008
Superb novel about one of the most interesting periods of history. I went to Dura-Europos 25 years ago and saw the seige ramp - such a frisson! The author not only knows his period well but, more important, he writes so well the book is unputdownable. The comparisons with Iggulden and Cornwell are misplaced - Sidebottom is greatly their superior as a writer and as an historian. There is nothing pedestrian or glutinously sentimental here. I look forward keenly to a sequel.

Takes to long to get to the subject (the siege)evidently a period of Roman history the author and his learned friends are well versed in.
Having to refer to a very large glossary at the back of the book. Not for me. I will definitly not bother with part 2. Conn Iggulden need not look over his shoulder.

I got this book for my 21st and what a book. I read this book within a few day, such a great plot and I love the idea that I am going to meet Ballista (the main charater) not only in a second novel but also a third.

When you read this book you feel that you are there and fighting the Pursians. I would recommend this to anyone but beware there is alot of swearing in it but this shouldn't put you off.

Dr Harry Sidebottom is a lecturer at oxford university and he knows about this era, also this era of the Roman empire isn't explored as much as when Rome was the world power.

10/10 from me!!!!

Wow, great new writer...realistic action and thought, loved the fact the main character was an Anglo/Saxon in a Roman world. This is one of the best historical fiction stories i have read, and i have ready as many as i can. Now I can't wait for the next installment...when is that coming out?

It was refreshing to read a good novel about the 3rd century roman Empire. It had a lot of well detailed battle scenes and excellent background of that time in Rome's history. I very much enjoyed Ballista and his familia...looking forward to book 2 !
