Amazon.co.uk Review It's always good to welcome a Michael Connelly novel, and The Lincoln Lawyer is a strong addition to the Connelly bookshelf. This stand-alone legal thriller has all the adroit plotting and no-nonsense prose that are Connelly's trademarks, with a particularly strong protagonist. In the hierarchy of American lawyers, `Lincoln lawyers' are not held in the highest esteem. These are criminal defence attorneys who run their practices from a travelling Lincoln car, traversing the county of Los Angeles to hoover up whatever work is available, however basic. Connelly's tarnished hero is Mickey Heller, who has fine-tuned this less-than-impressive side of the legal profession to such a degree that few can match him: he knows all the ins and outs of the system, including precisely who to slip a back-hander to when appropriate. But Mickey finds a way to move upmarket when he acquires a well-heeled client. A rich young man from Beverly Hills has been arrested for savagely assaulting a woman, and the case falls in Mickey's lap. And though the lawyer is used to defending clients who are guilty as sin, it actually looks (for once) that his client is innocent. But Lincoln lawyers like Mickey are fully aware of the lottery that is their profession, and he isn't too surprised when the case goes pear-shaped. But (to his dismay) Mickey slowly learns that neither his client nor the victim in the case is quite what they seem to be, and soon there's a lot more than a penny-ante case at stake, with Mickey's life quite as much at risk as any reputation he might have. Connelly fans (an ever-growing army) will be pleased to hear that all the customary traits are fully on offer here, with one key component even more finely honed than usual: the gritty, idiomatic dialogue, which is richer and more entertaining than usual. --Barry Forshaw

Absolutely Brilliant June 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Connelley takes on Grisham, the King of legal drama's, and wins hands-down.
I read this in 2 sittings, the first 150 pages which was a good story, and later, when Connelley added all the depth and intrigue, I had to finish the remaining 350 pages as each chapter finished with a cliff hanger or some new revelation that got me hooked.
Mickey Haller is a wheeling- dealing defense lawyer who doesn't care about his clients guilt or innocence. To Mickey, it's all merely a challenge to add doubt on the prosecutions witnesses and evidence so that enough reasonable doubt exists to get his clients off. This goes well for Mickey's regular clients of druggies and hookers until he takes on rich kid Louie.
The story unfolds with great intensity and revelation and the trial itself gives a thrilling insight into trial strategy. Mickey goes through a host of ethical conundrums and is caught between a rock and a hard place, but hey, if anyone can get him out, it's Mickey. Absolutely brilliant.
fantastic April 10, 2008 I really enjoyed this book, I got swept along with the story, I totally fell in love with the main character. All characters written with depth and the story clever at times funny and sad. Highly gripping
You wish the storyline had been extended some more January 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thorougly enjoyed this and thought DAM when it ended kind of abruptly the way it did - this leaves you wishing there was more extended storyline - had me gripped.
one of the best thrillers I've read January 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I don't usually enjoy books from this genre but I thought this was great. A real page turner, well-written, convincing and with a superb twist. Excellent.
Very well crafted novel December 16, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Very well crafted novel - a real page turner. Michael Haller, who works as a defence lawyer in LA out of his Lincoln car, gets embroiled with a client charged with wounding and attempted rape. At first Roulet seems to be innocent but as the facts unfold Haller becomes less certain.... Very realistic about the need for the lawyer to get clients who can actually pay for his services and about the way he continues to juggle other cases and clients. Connolly is not shy of raising ethical issues of a lawyer's responsibility towards his client and also to the wider community.
A great read - a film waiting to happen!
