Can I give it 6 stars?
This book contains everything I needed to know. It answered all my questions and gave me the tools I needed to turn a dire first draft into something I'm almost happy with and I'm going to read it again before I start the next draft. It cut the confusion out of writing and made me think about what I was doing in a more rational way. I can't recommend it highly enough... I've read a few of these and you need buy no other book about how to write.
A must-have for any budding writer... July 31, 2008 I bought this book expecting a quick reference guide to the editing process I could dip in and out of. I was wrong; this book is much more than that. What it does is take you through every stage of writing, showing you mechanical systems, conventions and pitfalls encountered by most new writers, but written in such a warm, yet firm manner that you feel you are in the presence of true experts, who encourage creativity, but won't stand for sloppiness. The numerous examples are really useful and come from a range of authors, be they from blockbusting bestsellers or manuscripts from students attending on one of the authors' workshop events. So if you want a quick-fix book, this isn't for you; but if you take the time to read it cover to cover, the knowledge and understanding build and you finish with a much deeper comprehension of the editing art. It's well worth investing the time, as your book will benefit hugely from it in the long run.
Everything the other books have and a little more January 3, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I really like the book. It is about the mechanics of writing and doesn't have chapters on how to sit yourself down and whether you need a computer or not. This for me was very good. The book tells you how to go about picking faults in your manuscript and then correcting them. I bought a fair few books of this ilk trying to get the sort of info i wanted and whilst this isn't the onlt one that had it, it did have everything and all weel presented and easy to understand. I don't really do the exercises offered but the examples are very good and really get the point across.
If you need a book on the mechanics of writing then this is a good one.

Just a quick review. Can't add anymore than has already been said. I purchased a few how to write books searching for the Holy Grail, and now I think i've found it. Great how they give examples throughout the book. Other books I enjoyed were Steven King "On Writing" and "How to write a damn good novel" for the basics.
The Ideal Self Editing Guide June 10, 2006 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
Writers of fiction need look no further. Acquire a copy of Self Editing, read it, mark it, digest it, apply it. Sorry, Amazon, but once a writer has Browne and King to guide them, no other book is necessary. My personal thanks to Renni and Dave. I intended writing to them years ago. My own two books, unpublished at that stage, were in dire need of self-editing, and now they're published, and available on this site.
Like Terri Pine, I discovered new depths of self-deprecation when I re-read the manuscripts. Others to whom I have recommended the book have felt the same. Three cheers for Self Editing.
