4 out of 5 stars Did I ever mention that I love Mike Gayle??   February 22, 2008

Well I do! His books are always a joy to read, witty, refreshing and honest and 'WISH YOU WERE HERE' is no exception!

'WISH YOU WERE HERE' centers around three friends who upon ones break up with his longtime girlfriend, decide that a holiday to bring his spirits back up is just what the Dr. ordered. The trio, now in their mid-thirties decide to relive their misspent youth by returning to a vacation spot in Crete that held special memories for each. Unfortunately once they arrive the 18-29 crowd just isn't what they remembered. They spend night after night trying to recreate their youth soon settling upon the realization that they are no longer young or hip.

Watching these three almost middle aged men bumble about trying to keep up with the young guys with the rippling muscles and party all day and night attitude and the even younger girls with the oh-so-short skirts and barely there bikini's is a riot! But watching the main character, Charlie, come to terms with the loss of his long term relationship is the heart of this story and what we have grown to know and love about all of Mr. Gayles books.

4 out of 5 stars A great read   January 13, 2008

Wish you were here by Mike Gayle truly reflects the writing style and light natured reading, which we readers truly associate and become accustomed with the author novels. The author's specialities of relationships and thirty something is well touched upon and narrated into an enjoyable read.

Wish you were here is about a holiday resort aimed at 18 to 30 years in the party capital of Crete. The three main characters featured in the novel include Charlie, Andy and Tom, whose holiday adventures are followed throughout the novel. The adventures lead to new directions. All will be revealed in the novel.

Wish you were here strong characterisation and reflection of modern society is the main strengths of the novel. The story unfolded attracts reader's attention, but does drag on a little.

Overall, Wish you were here is light piece of reading to really enjoy. Simple language, nice story and great characters are key attrubutes that propel this novel to a pleasurable and enjoyable read.

3 out of 5 stars You Are Here Lite   January 7, 2008

Like a few other reviewers I straight away thought that this was going to be a 'You Are Here' rip off and read it with that curiosity in mind, having never read a Mike Gayle book before. To be honest it was ok, although a bit too easy going and dull in places and maybe it was a bit unfair to have the You Are Here comparison in mind as it did not have the same punch or cutting edge. Interesting never the less.

1 out of 5 stars utter rubbish   November 19, 2007

This book is a testimony to the junk many publishing houses think we - the public - will lap up if the cover is pretty enough. All who gave this the OK at the editorial meeting should be sacked. It seriously made me feel like starting a website for those readers who feel swindled out of their money. With any other product you can take it back and get a refund if it doesn't do what it says on the tin, but not with books. Although maybe I should try it. A few Mrs Angry rants at my local Waterstones would probably get me in the newspapers.

One last question - whatever makes journalists think they can write novels?? Answers on a postcard
