4 out of 5 stars Boy Soldier, first in an exciting series!!   May 15, 2008

This is the first of the explosive series by Andy McNab. Andy uses his experience as an SAS soldier in this book. It starts of with Danny's life long ambition to join the army. But his chance is destroyed when he finds out that his Grandfather (Fergus Watts) betrayed his country. Danny and his friend Elena start trying to locate Fergus. They find him by tracking his mobile. His house appears to be in the middle of nowhere but is it? Also Danny has ex-reporter Eddie Moyles, who wrote an article saying that Fergus Watts was a traitor, is on his case and trying to un-cover the true story. What Danny doesn't know is that people are on his case but why? When he finds his Grandfather will he discover the truth? Is Fergus the real traitor? He also has more to deal with that originally thought... I very much enjoyed this book.

4 out of 5 stars great thriller - McNab uses his knowledge brilliantly   March 19, 2008
This action thriller from former SAS soldier Andy McNab is a true testament to his time as a boy soldier. He is able to give a detailed description of his experiences in a highly entertaining teenage novel with a great account on action, weapon and procedures.

The stereotypical teenager lead character of Danny Watts helps readers learn about the SAS as Danny goes on the run with his grandfather, a former soldier who operated as an undercover operative. And as Danny starts to learn more about survival procedures Fergus learns a lot from his grandson to.

The plot is consistent with action and mystery around every corner as the pair face numerous obstacles in their quest to be free.

The attention to detail by McNab is excellent and very formal. At times you wonder if it's not a novel but a SAS handbook, especially with a list on the first page about code-words and their meanings, but regardless it's entertaining from beginning to end and the follow ups of Payback, Avenger and Meltdown are must reads after this first instalment of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Finally ... an engaging read for boys and girls alike!   November 17, 2007

I am a teacher and was looking for a book for teenagers that wasn't patronising, dull and had all the elements of adult fiction in. Boy Soldier has all of the above. It gripped me until the end, it didn't patronise for a younger audience and it used elements that are relevant to teenagers in today's society such as MSN, Email, text messaging and so on. It is also quick paced and littered with action.

So there is 2 swear words in it - in my school they call each other far worse! Also, it is not in there for the hell of it - it is within context. Besides, I can completely ignore that if it's going to get them to read and believe me, this is definitely the book to engage the boys (and I can vouch for the girls, as I was completely enthralled also!)

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book For Teens   March 1, 2007

This high octaince, explosive action story written by an ex SAS hero matches or overtakes the ALPHA Force stories written by Chris Ryan. These stories are based on Military style action and are aimed at teens. Danny and Fergus Watts are on the run as MI6 want to track them down to kill them due to Danny's grandfather unfortunate betrayal in an SAS Operation. Once I started I could not stop its was just like glue!!
