4 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to the ranks of good crime writers   April 12, 2008
Stuart MacBride's hero DS Logan MacRae is a detective in the classic mould. Wounded, flawed, with a disastrous love life and prone to maverick behaviours. He is sympathetic and entertaining and the supporting cast in this first novel of both senior and junior officers are believeable and interesting. The plot, which revolves around disappearing children is strong and complex and sustained right to the end. I recommend this book, and enjoyed it so much myself I have just ordered the next two in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the audio CDs!   March 25, 2008
I have yet to actually read one of Stuart MacBride's books, because instead I started listening to them on audio CD. They are read by John Sessions, who is absolutely brilliant at bringing all the characters to life. He injects the story telling with excellent pace and really brings the humour out. I can completely imagine each character and the places described. The stories are excellent and are thrilling to listen to while stuck in the traffic! Try the audio CDs, you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Far Fetched + Inaccurate   March 7, 2008

Being both an Aberdonian + Police Officer feel well qualified to state - No one has for years referred to Female Police Officers as WPC's which I found particularly irritating. In addition no police officer I've ever worked with in Scotland uses the term 'form' - should read 'pre cons' for previous convictions'.
I was amazed as totally unrealistically dead toddlers either appeared or live ones disappeared - Totally unbelievable!!!

5 out of 5 stars Promising debut...........................................................   February 14, 2008
Born in Aberdeen, this book was of special interest to me. However, I do not remember the weather being quite so bad before Christmas as depicted, nor do I recall quite so many dead bodies lying around. Still let's give in to artistic license.
This was a super book. It was rather lengthy and dragged on a bit in parts, but the humour was there along with the corpses. It has been called gruesome but perhaps the years have left callouses on me and I accepted it for what it was.
The characters are full of zest and I hope remain through the sequals - the sweetie gobbling Insch, the chain-smoking Steele, the boys on the front desk and a whole host of other colourful individuals.
The ending left a lot to be desired and I confess to having seen through a number of the twists one hundred pages before the constabulary, but neverthless this was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I hope Stuart MacBride keeps up the standard.
Fifty pages from the end, I confess I ordered the second in the series for fear of going through withdrawal.
Great humour and breezy.
Read this one!

I love reading crime books and in particular books whose storyline is based in the UK. Even better are books based in Scotland and to top it off Stuart MacBride has written books based in my hometown of Aberdeen!!
Fantastically well written and gruesome at times but absolute pure genius. Sometimes while walking through Aberdeen I had to remind myself it was a fiction story and thankfully not real life!!
Definitely not one to be missed for those who enjoy this type of book but beware to those with a squeamish stomach as there are some very graphic descriptions in some parts!

Looking forward to every book he will be writing.
