2 out of 5 stars cute idea, but bad writing & unbelievable characterization   April 20, 2001

I was really disappointed in this book. When I bought it, based on reviews both of this book and the author's other books, I thought I would be in for a fun treat. Unfortunately, this book wasn't much fun at all. The writing style wasn't very good, plus there were lots of basic grammatical errors that any good copy editor should have fixed. Every time I would run into one of these errors, it would jar my concentration and would make me wonder why I was bothering to read this.

I might have been able to forgive the bad writing style if the story itself had been believable. I realize that you have to suspend your disbelief in order to read a book such as this--I read lots of SF, fantasy, and horror, so I'm used to doing that--but in order to do so, you have to have believable characters, as well as a believable plot and internal logic. This book had none of these elements. The cats didn't come off as cats but as furry humans, and the human characters were mostly cliches as well.

I'm giving this book two stars instead of one, since I managed to finish the book. (I'd reserve one star for something completely unreadable.) If you want to read about "talking" cats, however, I would recommend the books of Gabriel King. He manages to create realistic cat characters in a much more original fantastical setting.

4 out of 5 stars Really great 'just for fun' reading   November 4, 1998
I will be reading every book in this series. But I like occasionally the books that are'potato chips and beer' reading. This book was well written and the characters are loveable, believable and palatable. I reccomend reading aloud to your cats as they will laugh at the serious parts and become very dour at the humor. Might make you look at them a little differently when finished, also.
