Well, I am sorry to intrude on this new secret club. Here is the Janet Evanovich fan club in all its glory. Hundreds of reviews, millions of sales and almost all the reviews 5 star. I feel like an intruder at a tupperware party.Several people say this is their favourite book of all time...Well I had better just creep off quietly and leave you all to it..But first a quick look at the book as I saw it..
I was recommended Ms Plum by a client because I had nothing to read while waiting patiently for the new thriller by American Allan Furst. He writes deeply moving and very authentic historic novels, usually in a second world war scenario. Berlin Noire except noirer.
So I took to Ms Plum and have laughed my way through two books of what seems more an industry than a series of novels. You can even guess the titles way ahead like a pop culture bingo caller; 96 ..Tears, 101...oh dear.
But I have laughed my way through two books and I will then try a third and then... So one is drawn into this world of New Jersey which is very different from the Sopranos. I am no bounty hunter (prefer a coconut, myself ha ha) but I can not believe for one instant that any aspect of bounty hunting shown here is remotely realistic. Or the relationship between the police and bounty hunters , or the portrayal of hookers as tarts with heart. Or almost any of this. I should be writing that this it utter tripe, worthy of one star and , while you are at it,PLEASE spare us the details of Ms Plum's outfit EVERY SINGLE CHANGE OF CLOTHING, EVERY SINGLE DAY!
So, yes these are exasperating books, but they will make you laugh and smile and you will not be able to walk away without finishing the book. You will then read another and help to keep Ms Evanovich in New Hampshire and Florida which can't be bad.Can think of several movie stars who could do Ms Plum, or just take Danica off the track - she's pretty feisty. So 3 stars because I am hooked despite this being a Mills and Boone world shown here.
All time favorite novel,,, February 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The first and second Stephanie Plum novels were definately the best of a pretty good series, and re-reading the first novel in the fourteen novel collection, it's easy to see how she helped to make Janet Evanovich as successful as she is.
This really isn't chick lit. If you're looking for a feisty heroine, great writing and GENUINLEY funny dialogue, with some romance thrown in, this is the series for you. Just one suggestion, don't bother with Evanovich's romance novels. They really aren't in the same league.
get this book, you wont be disappointed. September 19, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this novel after reading all the great reviews that had been left on amazon - and I can definitely agree it is a great book. I like audiobooks, so have now managed to get all the Janet Evanovich novels to listen to - and may I say they should print a warning notice on them - do not drive whilst listening to these books!! I tend to go the long way home each night just so I can listen to another chapter of the book - plus I get very strange looks from fellow drivers staring at me sitting in my seat in histerics laughing!! Janet Evanovich is an excellent writer who keeps you wondering what nutty Stephanie will do next - get this book, you wont be disappointed. Another book you must read is-The Fates by Tino Georgiou.
great reading gem of a book. September 12, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Janet Evanovich's "One For The Money" is an exceptional mystery romance, with extraordinary humor, (guaranteed to brighten the darkest mood), and originality. Once I began to read this book, the first in a series, I could not put it down.
A twist on the normal chick lit September 9, 2007 The writing is fairly witty and the plot - young woman, down on her luck, reasonably pretty and not the sharpest tool in the box becoming a bounty hunter - is a change to the normal chick lit fodder.
But chick lit it is - if you're after a really strong storyline and something that's a real page turner then I'd look elsewhere - this is really the kind of thing that you can pick up after a hard day and read on the train if you want something to make you smile.
However I note with interest that Janet Evanovich has over ten books now about the adventures of Stephanie Plum. So whilst I'm not placing another order on Amazon for the next in the series, clearly there is an avid fan base out there somewhere.
