Refreshingly gentle April 26, 2008 This is a charming, book which will make the reader feel like travelling to Botswana themselves. Mma Ramotswe is quite simply a sweetie, and the book is quietly amusing with an underlying good-natured feel which is a real panacea in our cynical times.
Simply perfect April 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The dramatisation for these CDs was done by McCall-Smith so they retain the rhythm and personality of the books much better than other recordings. The voices are just right for the characters. These CDs are as enjoyable in the same way as the books in the simple yet powerful message they bring from life in Africa.
Charming and Memorable March 24, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Precious Ramotswe is a literary herione unlike any other. And 'The Number One Ladies' Detective Agency' is a detective series without precedent. For the very first time, we get to read about Africa in a happy, uplifting context, seen through the eyes of someone who knows and loves the continent. Not only are the storylines of the 'The Number One Ladies' Detective Agency' books charming and engaging, but through these stories, the lives of ordinary Botwanans transpire in a way never brought to a reading audience before. Don't buy one of the series, buy them all.
I can't wait for the TV series! (Audio Review) March 22, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I originally bought the book "The No 1 Detective Ladies Agency" a few years ago, as I had heard rave reviews about it and the rest of the series. However due to my busy schedule I never found time to read it. As I tend to get stuck in my car on motorways I hit on the idea of buying the Audio Book on CD to play in my car on long journeys. It turned out to be one of my best decisions. Adjoa Andoh brings the characters to life in a way that is quite incredible. Her reading is lively, beautiful and captures the true essence of what Alexander McCall Smith is trying to convey in the words of the book. This is one of the most delightful books I have ever come across. Precious Ramotswe the heroine and all the other colourful characters in the book simply have to be experienced. It makes me want to visit Botswana as soon as possible. If you haven't tried the audio book, I urge you to try it. Even if you loved reading the book, I suspect with Adjoa Andoh's brilliant and inspired narration, you will love the Audio Book version even more!
A delightful read March 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was highly enjoyable. There was such an easygoing jaunty manner about this book, which was immensely satisfying. McCall has such a beautiful writing style; witty eloquent words of wisdom coupled with accurate and knowing observations: I can see myself becoming quite addicted to this charming series. As for Mma Ramotswe - a lot of her success seemed to be down to sheer luck rather than any great skill but even so, very worthy of your time and effort.
