3 out of 5 stars Is Beverly Barton's THE PROTECTORS losing it's edge?   December 9, 2007

...I ask this as I found this, and it's connected book Dangerous Deception, both rather tame. The female lead, Lexie, is a tad boring, and whilst the male lead is an Alpha male, he's stereotypical of BB's The Protectors' male leads in that he's over 40, cynical, blase, has killed before, for which he has some remorse, but guess what - he's ready (in my opinion, too ready) to accept that he's falling in love. It wasn't a bad book, but the storylines and characters are too similar, and whilst with the first few books in the series, other agents were name-dropped/featured often enough that when each had his/her own book, it felt like you knew them. Now, as each character gets married, he/she leaves Dundee's, and the new characters are ones that seem to just appear and it's almost as if you feel a bit cheated. I think that what the series needs to revitalise it is the romance between Sawyer and Lucie, but then again, as he now runs Dundee's, if he gets married and leaves, who will end up running it, or will that be the end of the series, as there's currently no hint of his successor? From several hints in this book, I got the impression that S & L's tale will be coming fairly soon, as will that of Deke Bronson and the efficient Daisy Holbrook, Dundee's office manager. I have already advertised ATTD for sale, but given the lack of takers, maybe I'm not the only one thinking that maybe it's time to give the TP series a rest and retire all the agents!
