5 out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOK!!!   March 25, 2008
I really enjoyed Retribution and Last Witness so I was very excited to hear about Plea of Insanity! I was not disappinted at all. I could not put it down and loved every page!!! The different stories involved within the book held my interest and the characters and overall plot were captivating. Can't wait for Jilliane's next book!!

1 out of 5 stars Very dull   March 9, 2008
I thought this book looked really interesting from the synopsis on the back cover but what a disappointment. I had read well over 100 pages and felt as though the story hadn't even got going at all, with a decent novel you would expect to be fairly involved by that point. I felt all that had happened was that I'd had a brief idea of the crime and possible suspect and a fairly thorough lesson in the setup of the prosecution dept and judges etc in the state.
I don't know whether the story picked up at all as by 150 pages I gave up (something I hate to do with a book), but I didn't feel up to wading through another 500 or so pages of the same dreary stuff. Judging by a number of the other reviews on here it would look as if it wasn't much better any further on.

5 out of 5 stars Great Author - Captivating Story   February 2, 2008
I really did like this book and felt that I didn't want to put it down. I just needed to know what was going to happen next.

It is a shame that the title of the book gives the main storyline away but it was nevertheless a really good story. It was also an eyeopener and if not somewhat educational.

Having read all Kay Scarpetta books and having loved most of them I think that Jillian Hoffman is going to be my new favourite author.

Great stories and a great way of writing.

3 out of 5 stars exhausted   January 2, 2008
I really enjoyed Ms Hoffmans first two novels and was excited about starting the next one. The plot, although is swallowed up in court trivia which at times is tedious. I know we should all be able to grasp court proceedings to enable us to enjoy the story but I was bored. The journey into Julias past, although interesting again managed to blanket over what could have been a great story.

1 out of 5 stars plea of mercy!   November 13, 2007

that was MY plea while reading this book. Why? While a very well written and researched book, the author failed greatly to deliver a gripping story. As a thriller fan I was bored out of my mind. Like many other readers, I was mislead by the appealing synopsis so much so that I bought the hard cover because I couldn't wait to read it. Well, I ended up thumbing through it, hoping to find somewhere the "thrill", but didn't. If I wanted to read a book about schizophrenia I wouldn't have bought crime fiction. As much as I appreciate learning about new things while reading, the most important thing in a fiction book is its plot, which in this case is a letdown because she focuses in a narrative about this illness so much that forgets about the story, which makes reading this book a painful task. This is NOT a thriller and it shouldn't be advertised as one. The heroine is a sad, flat and unreal character who is considered by her pears to be the hot new prosecutor in town, even though she makes so many stupid and unprofessional mistakes (forgets she has a court date, etc)
While Retribution is one of my favorite books of all time, Plea of Insanity is nothing but a huge disappointment. Get it from the library if you must form your own opinion, but don't spend money on this book.
