 The Journey Begins November 14, 2006
I discovered the "Skinner" books when I visited Edinburgh on a regular business. As the books are set in Edinburgh it really brought them to life being in the area. I always looked over my shoulder when going through some if those closes and the stair at the side of the Scotsman building.
This book introduces the characters whose lives and careers you follow in subsequent books. It is best to read them in sequence if you can.
If you like a good murder mystery with a modern twist, read this book.

This was my first Skinner book and I won't go out in a rush to buy another one. If you're looking for a fast-paced pageturner full of twists and suspense, buy something else. This book is the opposite. I really struggled with it for days until I finally gave up and speed-rushed through the story, reading only the last few pages properly again - something I've never done before.I read around 50 detective novels/thrillers a year and for a truly enjoyable reading experience, I can recommend writers such as Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Harlan Coben, or Val McDermid.

Of modern writers I rate Ian Rankin, Ruth Rendal, Reginald Hill, Peter Robinson and Peter Lovesey.Spotted a pattern there ? This is the first Skinner book I've read and you can be sure it won't be the last ! To fans of the five writers named above you can buy this book with TOTAL confidence

Quintine Jardine starts to build the rich character of Bob Skinner from the start, capturing the quintessence of both Edinburgh and a crime investigation. The first of eleven books in the series. You'll pick it up and not put it down.

On a visit to Edinburgh, I was fascinated to see the number of books by Quintin Jardine on the shelves - here in the south of England he is unheard of. Yet for plot and pace of story this is fantastic - it will keep you awake reading - our copy is already in its 4th set of hands in 8 weeks. As the other reviewer says - read them in sequence.
