5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant   April 21, 2004

I picked up the name of Harlam Coben after following a recommendation fromAmazon in relation to the James Patterson Novels that I have been reading. From the very start, this book gripped me. The characters are strong, yetfunny, with lots of satire & humour thrown in. The true star of the bookis the main characters sidekick 'Winthorpe'.
It's worth reading the books just for when he appears & the ending to the'Fade Away' is truley excellent. It's quite a meaty read when you read 3novels in one, but I guarantee you that the time will literally fly.

I'll keep it simple. Harlan Coben is my favourite writer and Myron Bolitar's novels are all full of twists, action, irony and feeling. If you like Patterson, Deaver etc then you will love Coben. In this trilogy we learn about Bolitar's past and the complexities of the present. Gripping yet funny enough to let you see that all the characters are (well, can be anyway!) real and everyone has their own personal problems.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing   November 11, 2003

A poorly written book, predictably plotted with out dated humour. Tries to hard to be funny. Not in the same league as Robert Crais or Michael Connelly. Stricly second devision !

A badly written book, childish plots and second hand humour. Not in the same league as Robert Crais or Michael Connelly.

5 out of 5 stars I wasn't able to put it down...   May 17, 2003

I'm not one who usually likes to read two or more books in a row by any one author. But I still bought this brick of a book. The size of it alone made me keep it in my to-be-read pile for over a month before I picked it up. Then I read it cover to cover in less than a week, followed by the rest of the Myron Bolitar novels published to date, followed by Harlan Coben's other novels. I found them all incredibly good and the perfect crime novels for my liking. Coben mixes the whodunnit with perfectly placed wit, irony and sarcasm. He says what we're all thinking, but that we'd never think to say as cleverly as he does. The unlikely trio of Myron, Win and Esperanza just adds to the entertainment value. They're all exaggerated, but done in a very clever way so that it becomes entertaining rather than annoying. By sticking to setting the novels in his home turf Coben also manages to create a familiarity with the area for his readers. If you've never read a book by Coben before, this is the perfect one to start with. And if you like this, let me just tell you that Coben's books just get better and better. I can't wait to read his next book.
