Murder, spies and sex in C19th Vienna July 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the third in the series about Max Lieberman a disciple of Freud, and his friend Inspector Reinhardt set in C19th Vienna. The first, Mortal Mischief, was a good read but with an increasingly silly murder plot. This outing has corrected those problems and is a much more confident and credible offering.
A military cadet in a prestigious school in Vienna is found dead, but the pathologist can't work out what killed him and there are mysterious cuts on his body that seem to point to a sadistic circle of sexual bullies at the school...
Tallis maintains a multi-layered story that juxtaposes the murder investigation with Reinhardt's involvement in high-level spying within the Hapsburg Empire, and Leiberman's personal and romantic life.
The characters are interesting and well-drawn, the writing precise and evocative (Tallis is himself a University of London clinical psychologist) and the representation of Vienna intriguing. Freud makes his usual appearance and while some of the more 'Freudian' episodes are somewhat predictable this is still excellent entertainment, intelligent, humurous, and just ever so slightly tongue-in-cheek.
