A great graphic novel in the style of a James Bond film June 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Taken as a graphic novel representation of a James Bond film, I think the "Death Wing" collection of stories is great fun. Not up to the standards of the most discerning James Bond expert perhaps, but very entertaining for all that. I can particularly imagine Roger Moore playing 007 in the "Sea Dragon" episode, which is very 1970's Bond.
Take it as an entertaining comic book within the 007 brand and you'll have great fun with it.
Well worth reading June 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well drawn black and white newspaper dailies, good adaptations of Flemings stories. Well worth reading.
What a fool........! March 23, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
In response to the other reviewer - why place a totally negative review when it's your own stupidity and lack of knowledge that was at fault, not the actual book. As it stands, the Titan reproductions of the James Bond newspaper strips have been a welcome addition to any 007 fan's collection. Apart from those based on the original Ian Fleming novels, most have never been previously available in print outside the original newpaper publication and provide an interesting addition to the Bond canon.
Ian Fleming? - I don't think so! January 25, 2008 5 out of 14 found this review helpful
What was I thinking when I ordered this book? A newly published collection of Fleming's short stories? Naive fool that I was.
This book is a collection of comic strips published in the Express in the late 1970s. There is a forward by Roger Moore's first Bond-girl and a short article on the history of Bond cartoon strips in the US and the UK. I am not against the concept of the "graphic novel" in principle - in fact I'm a great fan of Asterix, Tintin, and a number of other (mainly French or Belgian) "bd"s, but I did not get the impression that this was a good example of the genre. The drawing is not of a high quality - quite probably a limitation imposed by the original requirement for it to be clear in newsprint, and I did not find the plots terribly interesting even within the limitations imposed by their delivery in four-frame instalments.
What amazes me is that the publisher (Italy-based Titan Books), and Amazon, put Ian Fleming down as author. I can only imagine that some parts of it were based on original Fleming stories, but, all in all, I think that claiming Fleming as author is misrepresentation. I sent the book back!
In short, be warned - that this is a "graphic novel" was far from obvious to me.
