2 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book.   July 16, 2008

Sounds great doesn't it? Murders, a dominatrix, a paedophile ring, goths, Freemasons and a legal drama. This book has all of the above but unfortunately they are all just thrown together. The plot is all over the place, the characters especially the principal are unbelievable and annoying and I suspect previous reviews are by people with an impure motive. I bought this book on their reviews and feel very cheated. This book is in fact written by two people and it looks like they don't talk to each other much as the story meanders all over Edinburgh. Avoid.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as others make out   July 15, 2008

I bought this book based on the other reviews and it was no where near as good as I was expecting. The plot line is meshed together like a badly stitched patchwork quilt (should that be Kilt?) There is no flow like Rankin or Harvey or Goddard. There are bits of Scottish law interspersed within the story line that are of a very dubious significance to the book and seem to be shoe horned in just to prove the author has worked in the legal profession. . Brodie MacLennan is a very unlike able character, ace lawyer one minute, Biker chick the next, crime fighter, hypnotist and child of a notorious whore. Scottish Pants !!

5 out of 5 stars stunning debut novel!   March 22, 2008

Scottish crime fiction is some of the best in the world...and Scottish based Dark Angels is one of the best crime novels I have read in a long time!

Brodie McClennan is a strong protagonist with something very likeable about her while the other supporting charaacters are well drawn and vivid.

The plot is strong and goes like a rocket, staying the right side of unbelievable while Edinburgh excels itself as the Gothic backdrop to this atmospheric novel.

I'm so glad there are more Brodie McClennan novels to come because I couldn't put this one down! Read it in one sitting and then went back to it to savour the fine detail, sly wit and many twists and turns.

Definitely going to be one of my books of the year...and it's only March!

5 out of 5 stars unputdownable page turner   December 27, 2007

I loved this book and could not put it down, I found myself reading it long into the night as each page had me hooked and wanting more. It is an absolute page turner and like the mark of all great books although I could not wait to finish it to get the answers, when I had finished it missed the rollercoaster ride of drama and excitement it took me on and I wished I was still reading it. I eagerly await the next book.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal   November 30, 2007

I purchased this book having seen the review by Ross Rozakis and I must admit that this book is incredible. It is like a formula 1 car. Fast from start to end with no let up in action. If you need something to give to someone this christmas then let this be the book. Although I would probably say not to give it to kids. I believe that what makes this book so good is it is exactly what it says it is. It is a crime thriller and if you are not on the edge of your seat throughout this book then I will be amazed. This partnership has all the makings of one of the great crime novelists.
