5 out of 5 stars The Number One Ladie's Detective Book of all time   May 29, 2004

This is an absolutely lovely book. It is a refreshing change from cliche' detective stories, in this book the characters themselves lead their own lives with real tasks and duties whilst also solving unanswered questions.

The beautiful and charming setting make you long to go to Africa but also takes you there in your armchair. You feel that you know the characters well and that they would be a pleasure to meet. A calming and relaxing book with the slightest hint of philosophy. The characters seem so real, that I would be surprised if the author hadn't met someone like Mma Ramotswe before. Like the name of the main character absolutely Precious.

Easy, relaxing reading. This won't have you gripping the arms of your chair with white knuckles or send your pulse racing like many detective stories. It will, however, put a smile on your face many times as you are immersed in the charming world of Mma Ramotswe and Botswana's only ladies' detective agency. There is no convoluted plot, no vast cast of characters to remember. It is therefore no problem to put the book down for a couple of days, then come back to it and pick up the thread. And you will want to pick it up again.
