5 out of 5 stars Intense and intriguing   March 6, 2003

This book is intense, when it arrived I found it difficult to put down. My poor kids were neglected until I finished it. The story is well written giving you time to explore all the different characters and then to link them up. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a thriller with lots of twists and turns.
Slighty disturbing story line which has haunted me for a few days now.

4 out of 5 stars Silence of the Lambs with knobs on   November 14, 2002

Late one night, a shopping mall security guard finds a young girl wandering about in shock, covered entirely in tiny tattooed fish scales and with no memory of how this happened. Although the girl is placed in the care of a caring single woman, both are soon on the run from shadowy religious fanatics intent upon reclaiming the girl for their abhorrent rites. Readers will be equally attracted and repelled by the creepy atmosphere and characters who populate this original if disturbing work. This is Silence of the Lambs with knobs on.

4 out of 5 stars A gripping thriller with a difference   January 29, 2002

If you love mysteries, but want something a little bit out of the ordinary, then I would highly recommend this book. It is written in a very easy style (so makes ideal holiday reading) but this does not mean that the quality of the plot is in any way compromised.

We are taken on an emotional journey, feeling for both the main protagonists - the tattoo girl and Lucy, the woman who fights to find out what happened to the girl she has adopted. The suspense and intrigue are maintained throughout, and there are a few twists and turns before the mystery is slowly and cleverly unravelled.

My only qualm would be that this novel does test the boundaries of believability at times. However, the writing is so good that it draws you in completely, and this is really only an afterthought.

A great debut - I would certainly read more Brooke Stevens.

4 out of 5 stars gripping, dark ultimately uplifting   January 11, 2002

I was intrigued by the blurb on the back of this novel and bought this book for reading on holiday. Once started, I was fascinted with what was happening. Perhaps because I'd recently been discussing Katherine Dunne's "Geek Love", I was drawn to the dark, circus-life side of the book.
I'm an English teacher and I've just loaned the book to one of my students because I feel that it's got a great mix of literary qualities and thrilling plot development.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and would like to read more of the author's work.
