An astounding recreation of a victorian England September 13, 2002 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and the wonderful writings of Arthur Conan Doyle have always been a great passion of mine. Stories filled with suspense, atmosphere, love; every strain of human life. Add to the pot the greatest detective ever to roam the pages of crime literature and you have a potent cocktail. Reading the stories over and over is a joy to behold, sadly listening to most audio tape interpretations is not.Usually some acheingly dull bore will laboriously read every word onto tape without the least hint of excitement in his voice. I wanted smoke filled rooms, a cold dark London full of Hanson carriages, with the taste of danger and crime ever present, different actors playing every role. Thankfully BBC Radio 4 have given me this. Using professional actors of the highest calibre, the victorian world of Sherlock Holmes has been dramatically reconstructed. The cast are brilliant, with the late great Michael Williams shining as Dr Watson, the loyal companion to Clive Merrison's mesmerising Sherlock Holmes. This is only the first tape in a series of 18 - so with stories so well adapted and dramatised for radio - in addition to actors like Stephen Tompkinson, Judi Dench, Sam West, Brian Blessed, Imogen Stubbs and Peter Sallis making memorable appearances, the Sherlock holmes series are well worth a listen
