Amazon.co.uk Review
Kate Binchy's cosy tones as she begins this reading belie unexpected turns in the fate of Scarlet Feather, Tom Feather and Cathy Scarlet's catering business. Tom's relationship with beautiful, would-be model Marcella, is more off than on, and Cathy's marriage to Neil, ambitious civil rights lawyer, prickles as it sways between occasional help and undermining indifference. Catering successes and failures run parallel to family stresses and strains of a disapproving mother-in-law, unacceptable behaviour of comic cut-out though imperceptibly endearing nine-year-old twins, Simon and Maud, the children of Hannah's distrait brother and his somewhat deranged wife, and various secret lives of gambling, stealing, illegitimacy. By immersing themselves in the love and kindness of Cathy and her parents, Muttie and Lizzie, the twins improve considerably but from information innocently blurted out of the mouths of these babes into the ears of their much older and very light-fingered brother, Walter, comes disaster and near ruin. Thanks to Aunt Geraldine whose wealth, Cathy comes to realise, has accrued from her many affairs with mostly married men who love to compensate her in kind, Scarlet Feather thrives once more and emotional relationships are reassessed. Vibrant interpretation and pertinent abridgement of this latest novel from the fabulous Maeve Binchy. --Lyn Took. Running time six hours
