3 out of 5 stars It's good but....   February 12, 2008
I think Red Book is quite a good album but LACKS the "oompph" of earlier hit-laden albums such as White on Blonde and The Hush. Still it's nice easy listening stuff and Sharleen Spiteri's voice is still beautiful. I would say that first time Texas listeners would be better off checking out some of their earlier work.

4 out of 5 stars Their best release since "Best of"   May 20, 2007

This album was released after BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR, an album I had been longing for, yet it failed to deliver. With that album, I feared that Texas were on a downward slope to oblivion. RED BOOK looks set to put them back where they are meant to be - somewhere near the top. Sharleen has a great voice; very sexy, yet they seem to have true acclaim pass them by.

This offering has perhaps given them the biggest single since "Say What you Want" or "In Demand", in the form of "Sleep" - famously with Peter Kay in the video, which is hilarious. If you haven't seen or heard this single, I don't know where you've been for the last couple of years, it had quite a lot of radio play, as it was a catchy mainstream radio tune.

But RED BOOK does have other gems to offer. "What About Us" is a great song. It is quite ballady, but Sharleen's voice truly shines on it."Bad Weather" is also a good song which has one of the catchiest chorus' on the album. "Sleep" is my personal favourite. Sharleen's voice is complimented very well with the guest vocals of Paul Buchanan - a man who has one of the sexiest voices I have heard in a long time. This song is just great fun; a great love song which I'm sure everybody can easily relate to. It is clear to see why this was chosen as a single, the album is worth having just for this, I feel.

Texas remain to be one of my favourite bands, and altough I was disappointed with BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR, I am holding out great hope that RED BOOK is the beginning of them getting back into true form. I am eager to hear what they shall offer us next.

5 out of 5 stars a great texas album.   August 5, 2006
it is very hard to make as well as "White One Blonde" but with "Red Book" Texas offers an opus of an elegance to us almost as large as that of "White One Blonde". Superb songs decorate this opus such as "What about Us" a SPLENDID ballade, one of the most beautiful pieces of Texas but also "Just Hold on" which make me cry! but to comfort anything better than a good "get down tonight" or a good "getaway", 2 titles very effective!
finally if I were to note "Red Book" I would put 9/10 with a great thanks at the TEXAS group which spoils us with its beautifl songs! :)

2 out of 5 stars Anonymous disco and radio fodder   May 26, 2006

Texas started out so magnificently on their first three albums but unfortunately they changed tack and chose commercial success over musical originality. Good luck to them for their success but the price is an album like this. With the exception of a couple of tracks, the vocals could be almost anyone and the rest of the group have been reduced to little more a standard studio backing setup paired with a drum machine and lots of syrupy strings.

Hopefully this is their musical nadir and they can use their undeniable success to relax and reach back to their musical roots but I fear there's little sign of it.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to it...   April 4, 2006

Well this album is good enough that if you did not know better it could be a 'best of' album of Texas - almost every track is standout, and yet there is sufficient variety that you can have it on loop in the car and you won't get tired of it.
It's one of those CD's that make you want to turn it up to get the full wall of sound experience, as well as the detail of sound they manage to get in.
Supports repeated listenings, perfect pop music - it's not deep, but it sticks in the head and it's absolutely satisfying....
