I am very interested in learning accents, and American in particular. I have been looking for such a book for a long time, and was really glad to find it. The book is excellent, it covers everything, with special focus on some problomatic areas like paragraph intonation and set phrases/ descriptive phrases intonation and stress distinction. The organization and systematic order of the chapters in the book could not get better. It takes you from the basic and essential stress patterns to get to the harder and fundamental intonation change and rhythm. Exercises are there too to make it easier to apply what you've learned. If you apply what is included in this bookk and work hard with the audio CDs provided, you'll get a great result. You do not need to look any further cause you will not find a better and more solid American accent book. I even bought another one for a friend of mine and we are working on the book together. Great purchase, you won't regret it at all.

5 out of 5 stars The best accent and pronunciation training book   April 22, 2001

Even though English is my native language, leaving from the States I had pretty much lost my American accent. This book is very easy to read and it has a very easy to understand structure. This book covers intonation patterns that are essential if you want to say what you mean, it covers word connections and this will give you that American musical way of saying things. One great thing this book has to offer is that it tries to help you to some extent depending what is you native language, it covers Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Indian, French, German, Korean and Russian (but no British English). The 5 CDs that come with this book takes you through the book work by word essential to help you identify were your accent needs work.

Changing you accent is something not easy, needs patients and a lot of practice and this book is more than great start.

This book has helped me to regain what I long lost...
