4 out of 5 stars Useful listening practice - at an advanced level   June 24, 2007

The quote on the pack cover "the final step to fluency" is an exaggeration but this is still a useful purchase. But be warned - you need to be quite advanced to use this. I have done both levels of the older BBC French course before using this - and this still isn't at all easy. There are a series of conversations covering very day-to-day topics - to listen to at full speed (which is really fast!!) and also at a more leisurely speed. I found the variation of speed useful. You can get as much as you can from the full-speed track, and then listen out for the bits you missed on the slower tracks - and you also have printed texts and translations as a further help. I also found it good that the conversations were quite day-to-day. It is useful to listen to people just chatting rather than speaking at a more elevated level (as you tend to get when you listen to the news in French for example). The CDs are also easy to use while driving which has been good for me.

My one complaint is that the situations depicted are very American - the characters involved are doing things like watching a ball-game, or shopping at the mall. It didn't detract from the actual language-learning, but it does mean that there are absolutely no French cultural references in the conversations.
