4 out of 5 stars learn welsh   July 9, 2004

I am welsh but dont speak welsh, I found this book very helpful and gave lots of sentences that you had to change to welsh but by the time you got to those pages you could do so with some ease and there was space in the book for you to write, but do it in pencil because you can always erase it and practice again.
The only thing I can say about it is that it does deal with the north and south ways of speaking so you have to learn both because you cant tell which is the north and south at the very beginning and I would have liked to learn one first and then maybe go on to learn the other one next.

4 out of 5 stars Use it!   February 2, 2004

What can i say? i've found this book astonishingly useful, everyone i know that has used it has found it useful. The man's a genius when it comes to this, as well as having brought up some other really quality pieces. Check out his grammar; it's the definitive guide. Buy what this man writes and keep it- it'll help your children as well one day.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and enjoyable book and cassettes   March 29, 2002

This really is colloquial, Welsh just as you hear it. The book covers pronunciation and usage from both North and South Wales, with ample discussion of variations you are likely to encounter.

There is a paperback book and two audio cassettes. They are tightly integrated and you need them both...
Hwyl nawr!

5 out of 5 stars Welsh Language - North, Central or South ???   November 4, 2000

It is likely that someone wishing to embark on a Welsh Language course will wish to use the language in a particular region, probably the one in which he lives or intends to work. All the courses I have heard on BBC, and others, have little relevance to the distinct dialect of the North. My comment is that either the title or the description of a teaching publication should clearly state which dialect is represented in the course. Can anyone tell me who publishes an audio course appropriate to Gwynned ??.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction - practical yet comprehensive   September 29, 2000

This book is the first I've seen to present the modern Welsh language as it is actually spoken, rather than attempting a compromise between colloquial patterns and the far more conservative written language. The dialogues are entertaining, practical and idiomatic. The same author's grammar of modern Welsh ties in with it well, for those who want to delve deeper. Combine this with the new (I emphasize new) Teach Yourself Welsh book and you can't go wrong. Some of Mr King's explanations might be controversial with Welsh grammarians, but they make sense and the whole sphere could do with some iconoclasm. He's edited a very good dictionary too in the Oxford University series, and it's the only one I could honestly recommend to a beginner.
