| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Millions of consumers have become trapped in a spiral of debt, but there is hope. If you want to free yourself from the shackles of debt, this book is for you--it can help you "get out of debt, stay out of debt and live prosperously". Jerrold Mundis writes in a friendly, engaging style, urging readers to stop the cycle of spending. Mundis knows what he's talking about--he, too, was once thousands of (US) dollars in debt and didn't know where to turn. Anecdotes from Debtors Anonymous folks, plus multiple examples from the writer's own life and ledgers, make How to Get Out of Debt an encouraging read, not a condescending one. Once you start your program, you may want to periodically reread some chapters for inspiration or fun. --Jake Bond

A really helpful book. August 3, 2005 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
This book was written by an American for an American audience so some small sections (to do with bankcruptcy) aren't relevant to the British reader. Some parts are also a little dated (it was written around the time debit cards were being introduced) but aside from that it is an invaluable read. It gives positive advice on how to get out of debt, looks into reasons why people go into debt in the first place (that was a real eye opener) whatever their personal income and how to change negative perceptions of your self and situation. For the first time in a long time I felt positive and in control of my finances. I also felt a lot better about myself. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to change - it contains small and relatively easy steps that can make a long term difference.
Very very helpful. May 17, 2005 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I needed help and was ready to change my overspending ways. This is important becuase if you cant admit this to yourself nothing will help you, except maybe bankruptcy - which is so NOT a good idea. This book was exactly what I needed to back up my decision to take my financial position into my own hands. I knew how much I owed (27K) but I didnt know how I was going to sort it out. I have taken one star off because of the Americanisms, but other than that it was full of good advice and encouraging and not at all patronising or blaming. If you need help and you dont know where to start, this is a good book and well worth the money. I have recommended it to 2 of my friends who find themselves with too much month at the end of the money.
Simple but effective September 7, 2004 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a simple way of looking at how to get on the road to a prosperous future. I'm just starting out with a mortgage to cope with. The techniques are helping me to furnish my house without compromising my lifestyle. I strongly recommend anyone who is starting out or who has trouble with tracing their money to get this book. A few pounds invested now will return a lot more in the future. Read, enjoy and prosper.
An Oxfordshire reader who was 30,000 in debt writes ....... February 24, 2004 67 out of 67 found this review helpful
This book was recommended to me 12 years ago when I was 30,000 in debt with no assets whatsoever and on the point of bankruptcy. It turned my life around completely (if the author is reading this, I would like to say a long overdue thank you).My first reaction on reading the book was one of total relief. Whilst newspapers and magazines occasionally address the subject of a little light overspending at Christmas, I had never come across anything that dealt with large-scale debt. The book begins with a number of examples of others who had large debts and worked their way out of it. No miracles, no bankruptcies, just a lot of honesty with oneself and determination to take responsibility. The book is written by an American. Don't let that worry you. The principles are the same whichever side of the Atlantic you're on. The author goes on to explain the psychology of debting. Looking back I realise I overspent for psychological reasons. Trying to keep up with others, compensate for perceived deprivations etc. Realising this helped me get a hold of my finances. The rest of the book provides practical step-by-step help with dealing with creditors, managing your money (no matter how little you think you have - I was earning 14K p.a. at the time) so as to be able to repay your debts without feeling massive deprivation. It truly put me back on to a path that allowed me to take control of my finances, repay all my debts, recover my dignity and have a decent life. Twelve years on I have no debts and have a lovely home. If you are in debt and wondering whether to buy this book, I urge you to buy it, read it, re-read it and put the principles into practice. I promise it really can be done.
Why didn't I read this 10 years ago !! November 17, 2003 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
This really is a simple but very inspiring book. The 'lessons' in it should be taught to all people as they take on their first job. It will be the best money you have ever invested. I am on the road to no debt, my friend has also read the book and is doing well too. Both of us spent too long in the past looking at ways to earn more money (which isn't a problem) - but first learn to manage what you have got, this book will show you how without a doubt. If you can't afford it get a copy from the library. Good luck and God bless you.
