Amazon.co.uk Review Michael Gerber's The E-Myth Revisited should be required reading for anyone thinking about starting a business or for those who have already taken that fateful step. The title refers to the author's belief that entrepreneurs--typically brimming with good but distracting ideas--make poor businesspeople. He establishes an incredibly organised and regimented plan, so that daily details are scripted, freeing the entrepreneur's mind to build the long-term success or failure of the business. You don't need an MBA to understand or follow its directives; Gerber takes time to explain buzzwords and complex theories. Written in a clear and well-paced manner, The E-Myth Revisited is like receiving advice from an old friend. --Sharon Griggins

In a word: BRILLIANT! June 23, 2008 IF you want quick solutions to your business problems --this book is not the one for you. Instead, as somone wrote before on a review, it is an MBA in book. Well that might be an exaggeration, but believe me it comes close. It spells out why 80 percent of business fail within five years of start-up; I won't give away the answer. But if you are SERIOUS about business then this is an even more SERIOUS book for you. A good read. A very useful read!
A good starting point! (see "additional suggested reading" later in this review) June 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you ever felt that one day you would like to start a "successful" business - then E-myth Revisited is A GOOD PLACE TO START.
E-myth Revisited points out that not only do you have to work "in" the business, you also have to work "on" the business, and that you should have/create a "business operations manual" to help you do so. E-myth Revisited helps the forming of what some authors call the "business as a system" mind set. (see "additional suggested reading" later in this review)
The fact that you can work "on" your business alludes to the fact that you could "design" your business for the "results/performance" you want. As an engineer myself, the idea of designing a business for the "results/performance" you want is very appealing.
Depending on your abilities, experience, and goals, you may feel that E-myth Revisited provides you with information you can practically use right now.
However, I felt that E-myth Revisited could be supplemented by extra reading in the subject area of "business as a system". Therefore the following three books (available from Amazon) are highly recommended:-
Additional Suggested Reading 1)"Basics of Process Mapping" (by Robert Damelio) 2)"Improving Performance"(by Geary A. Rummler & Alan P. Brache) 3)"10-Day MBA" (by Steven Silbiger).
Absolutely horrible - do NOT buy this book! March 30, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I ordered this book based on a number of good reviews. Having read it however, I must say that it is probably the worst book I have ever read! You won't learn anything useful by reading it. Phrases like "a management system is a system designed into your prototype to produce a marketing result" are utterly useless!
The author goes on trying to explain marketing strategy and the concept of the `Irrational Decision Maker': "Coming out of his forehead, reaching up toward the ceiling, is an antenna! And at the end of the antenna is a sensor, beeping away like crazy."
About the 'Customer's Unconscious Mind' he writes: "It's like a vast, dark, underground sea in which a multitude of exotic creatures swim about, single and in schools, silently seeking out food, each with entirely different needs and tastes. Those creatures are your customer's expectations." Come on! How can you even print such nonsense?!
If you are a lost new-age soul, then by all means buy the book. However, if you, just like me, want to learn something about entrepreneurship (which the title suggests you will), this book will bring you NOTHING. I actually threw away the book (for the first time in my life) - felt it would make more use as recycled paper.
An MBA in a book March 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One book is all it takes to know exactly how to run a small business? OK, so you'll need an idea for a business first, but once you got it, read this. Running a small business already but sometimes feel a bit lost? Read this. Explosions will go off in your head as you get to about 2 thirds of the way through the book
Loses one star for the annoying parables November 14, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is probably the one book I would recommend for anyone with a failing business, anyone wanting to start a business, or anyone wanting to improve their business. Gerber's arguments are sound, practical and common-sense. It gives even the most hardened sceptics enough statistics to get their teeth into, but at the same time doesn't hesitate to give practical, how to advice and check lists on how to go about achieving the desired results. Gerber himself has been there, which is why this book is so profoundly convincing. The only thing I don't like is the moralistic story about the owner of a pie shop, in which he tells the tale of the practical lessons he gives. It works for many, but not for me. Having said that, this book is a real gem, and has the added advantage of not being too long, and not being full of jargon and spin type business terms that you won't understand. It's one of the only books I've found that also helps to concentrate the mind on the work/life balance issue which is a major issue in running a small business.
