5 out of 5 stars Superb...   June 30, 2008

As a fan of all John's work, from stage to screen, it was wonderful to finally have all the inside information of who he is and where he has been.
I'm not a big reader of books, but I bought Anything Goes and once i'd picked it up i didn't stop. I'd read the entire thing in only a few hours, and have read it again since.
It is highly entertaining, very funny, hugely touching and wonderfully honest. A brilliant story, wonderfully told.

1 out of 5 stars Self praise is no praise!   June 28, 2008

Self confidence is a good attribute to have but endless pages of John telling us how beautiful, talented and good looking he is became a bit tiresome. This wasn't a memoir and I didn't see the humour that others have commented on - the best person to read this book will be John himself as he can then massage his ego even further! Not endearing, very shallow, annoying footnotes on every page and not even well written. Needless to say I gave up before the end.

5 out of 5 stars Anything Goes, and much more   June 21, 2008
Funny, touching, naughty and nice. A frank and compeling read. Had trouble putting it down. Inspiring and enticing

3 out of 5 stars THE SECOND TIME AROUND   May 25, 2008

John Barrowman first 'entered' my life when I was asked by a guy who had bought my novel, 'Ghostly Gay Trilogy', who I would pick to play the main character (Ashley Wynter) if it was ever filmed. I smiled and said that "John Barrowman would be ideal if he had a crash course in learning the 'Wiltshire dialect'". Since reading his autobiography, I am not sure now whether this was said in haste or, on reflection, he would be right for the part!

I found the book entertaining in the usual showbiz tradition and at least there were no slagging off about fellow performers. The Valentino episode in which he regards himself as 'beautiful', plus the fact that he also knows that he has talent made me instantly think of the quote 'self-praise is no recommendation'. But you do have to be confident in today's entertainment world, especially in the cut-throat TV of talent shows and the monotonous reprise of 'finding a star' for bygone musicals.

I congratulate him on coming out and the events that followed and I wish him and Scott Gill every happiness now, and in both their careers.

I thought the ending of the book gave way for perhaps a second volume and I am sure that will happen and I think I will wait until then as, who knows, things can be better 'the second time around'!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!   May 22, 2008

Simply gorgeous! John Barrowman is charming, witty, honest and fantastically entertaining.
One of the (many) things which makes this book a must read is John's unfailing honesty in every chapter. Unlike so many other autobiographies, I never read a false word.
Rarely does a non fiction book make me laugh or cry, but this did both, many times. My all time favourite!
