4 out of 5 stars Witness testimony from a very brave guy   March 18, 2004

Great book, translation a bit odd, but the story is both moving and at points amusing. Gad Beck was both gay and jewish, neither of which was a good thing to be during the 2nd world war in Berlin. The astonishing story of his survival and how he helped others to survive as all his friends vanished one by one is a seriously important testimony- for anyone jewish, gay or not.
For anyone easily shocked it can be a bit graphic.

5 out of 5 stars touching and very interesting   December 8, 2000

I read the book in the original German version and found it amazing. Gad Beck has a truly touching way to describe events that are sometimes bittersweet and sometimes really horrible. Due to the topic, this book could easily be very depressing and something you would not want to read, but it isn't. It tells the story of a young Jewish man in Berlin during the 3rd Reich who managed to survive against all odds and never lost his positive attitude or sense of humour. While reading the book the old Berlin became alive before my eyes and I noticed how I began to re-evaluate things I knew about the time. It is an highly interesting book and I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a more personal account of those years.
