I'm not much of a Prince fan but I like what I see
I watched "Under the Cherry Moon" this past weekend for the first ever, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm surprised it has such bad reviews and was awarded with those Razzie's:
1987 Razzie Awards: Worst Director: Prince 1987 Razzie Awards: Worst Supporting Actor: Jerome Benton 1987 Razzie Awards: Worst Picture 1987 Razzie Awards: Worst Actor: Prince 1987 Razzie Awards: Worst Screenplay nominee 1987 Razzie Awards: Worst Supporting Actress nominee: Kristin Scott Thomas
I guess at the time most people wanted Prince to come out with a sequel to "Purple Rain." Prince trades in his Purple Rain character (The kid) to take on Christopher Tracy, a gigolo fresh from Miami who is scoping out the women of France, young and old alike, in search of much needed cash to pay his rent along with whatever else money can buy. He is accompanied by his sidekick, Tricky (Jerome Benton), who keeps him on his toes and his head of the clouds. Mary (Kristin Scott Thomas first starring role) is a stubborn, spoiled 21 year old brat who although may come off as a bit brazen at first, is really a frigid virgin who is not ready for the likes of Christopher when he shows up uninvited to her 21st birthday party. Opposites attract they find themselves becoming attracted to qualities they can't seem to find in anybody else.
This film has a surprise ending which took me off guard. This directorial; debut from Prince was quite impressive. His boyish antics and humor make for some charming entertainment. Though beset with many problems, ranging from period setting (are we in the 1940s or were vintage fashions suddenly the rage in '80's era France for about a month and Vogue didn't catch wind of it?), to an abrupt shift from light comedy to lukewarm melodrama that just doesn't feel right, Under the Cherry Moon somehow remains watchable due to the hypnotic charms of Prince, an affable foil in Benton (whose comic gifts belong in a better movie), and a smooth debut by Ms. Thomas, one of our era's most sophisticated ladies. Amongst the supporting troupe, Berkoff brings the same kind of menace from The Krays and his unforgettable turn as Victor Maitland from Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop to Mr. Sharon, and Shakespearean performer Francesca Annis is superb in a vital role as one of Christopher's past scammees.
Though some will challenge me, I feel Cherry's soundtrack is on a par with the legendary Purple platter and much more versatile, from the old-school r & b of "Boys and Girls" to the classy "Sometimes It Snows In April" and perhaps Prince's best single, the funkier than funk "Kiss". If you choose to view "Under the Cherry Moon" its best to watch it at night with the lights off so you can fully enjoy the whole karma and atmosphere of the film.
Not "Purple Rain 2" - this is a lighter, funnier Prince film January 26, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I watched "Under the Cherry Moon" last night for the first ever time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm surprised it has such bad reviews and is considered such a turkey by most critics. I guess at the time most people wanted Prince to come out with another "Purple Rain" type movie. Prince is a great physical comedian in this movie, I was surprised just how much as was laughing throughout it at his and Jerome Benton's antics. Prince's over-the-top narcissm throughout is clearly tongue-in-cheek, and he's having a whale of a time in this role. This is one of those quirky, odd, entertaining, screwball movies that has a real cult feeling to it, and definitely major rewatchability factor. Prince did a very good job directing this at the age of 27 (which I also wasn't expecting) and uses the songs off his "Parade" LP to excellent effect at the right moments and the right scenes. I love the "Girls and Boys" sequence with everyone doing that 80s arm-waving dance that Prince starts off on the piano. Kristin Scott Thomas is absolutely lovely in it - long time to go before her big break in "The English Patient". Steven Berkoff plays a similar villain that he did a few years earlier in "Beverly Hills Cop". Love the scene where Prince is trying to make it up with Scott-Thomas, and he does this by sitting in total silence at the back of his car with his shades on. Will have to try that technique someday. Shame, Jerome and Prince could've ended up being the modern-day screwball farce pair, if they'd made more films together. Extras are great as well - I love live performance video of Anotherloverholeinyourhead and the video for Girls and Boys with members of his Revolution band inserted into the scene from the film.
DON'T LISTEN 2 THE CRITICS, IF U LIKE PRINCE U'LL LOVE IT August 1, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
"Under The Cherry Moon" was very underrated by the critics but u mustn't lose this chance 2 get this Prince's classical on DVD. Prince mixes good music with a very funny film located on the Riviera, there's good humour, laugh, love and all the Prince world same way as Casablanca style. A real Prince fan wouldn't hesitate about this. U'll enjoy this film, u'll laugh with Tricky, u'll cry when Christopher dies and u'll dance with the frenetic "Girls And Boys". U'll really die in Prince's arms under the cherry moon
Best soundtrack ever... ....for the worst film ever July 12, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Under the cherry moon truely has to be one of the most dreadful films ever made. You sit there in stunned silence and embarrasment at just how bad the whole thing is - dreadful story and appalling acting - I still wince at the thought of it even now. Having said that, the music is absolutely amazing. For me, the best soundtrack ever written. For this reason alone, Under the cherry moon is a 'must have'. How does One rate this film? For the film alone I couldn't even award 1*, and for the soundtrack 5*. The overall rating must be somewhere inbetween.
It's different - it's good! March 17, 2005 This film is a complete break from the style, music and era of Purple Rain, which is very refreshing. It is also a lot more lighthearted, almost slapstick on occasions; but there is also a serious love-story and morals. If you like romantic comedies, you'll like this.
