Cuthbert for the curious February 20, 2007

First of all, this is the only book I have read about St Cuthbert so I cannot compare it with other biographies, but I am so pleased I decided to read it. This is only a small book: I read one chapter each day, so I finished it in 17 days. Small book though it is, it provides a fascinating insight into the life of one of Britain's greatest saints, with Adam offering pen portraits of the man at various stages of his life, from tending the sheep as a young man and witnessing the soul of St Aidan ascend to heaven, to the various miraculous events recorded about Cuthbert, and finally to his wanderings around the north of England in a coffin for centuries after his death. Adam uses artistic licence to flesh out the bare bones of what is known about Cuthbert and turns him into a real person, with extracts from conversations he may have had and thoughts that may have passed through his head. By the end of the book I felt as though I knew St Cuthbert well - or at least all the bits that need to be known about him. Although I enjoyed reading about this remarkable man, I didn't enjoy so much the prayers that conclude each chapter. I found them slightly irritating and a bit repetitive. I would have preferred questions for reflection or maybe short Bible passages that tie in to the theme of each chapter, but others may appreciate the Celtic-style prayers.
