A Big guide for everyone July 13, 2008 Midnight With the Mystics: A Little Guide to Freedom and Bliss: A Little Guide to Blissful Living Although the title introduces a little guide to freedom and bliss it is not. It is a Big guide for everyone to use as a map in our lives. Charyl and Sadghuru wrote a book anyone can read easily and with deep understanding of difficult meanings. In fatc, these explanations may be answers to questions every human being has. An enjoyable book to take you to the stars!
Hang out with the Guru! July 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Reading Cheryl Simone's collaborative, conversational book 'Midnights with the Mystic', I felt a very mixed cocktail of emotions. A dose of envy that she'd had the privilege of such close one-to-one contact with this clearly extraordinary being; a huge amount of empathy with Cheryl, the pattern of her life and her questioning nature, ever hungry for more truth and depth; and awe at the warmth, simplicity and accessibility with which Sadhguru delivers his messages.
As Cheryl stresses in the book, here is a man who addresses the person not the question when asked by a seeker, and as such can access the deepest needs and yearnings of every individual he connects with. In that sense, this is Cheryl's personal Q&A session, yet the material transcends that limitation and becomes truly universal.
Like Cheryl - and countless other western seekers- I've sampled a fair range of the goodies available at the 'spiritual supermarket'; all have taken me further on down the road and I believe that everything we add gives us an important ingredient in the 'wholeness pie' we are trying to make of our lives; but as Cheryl says,, 'This is not to say that the paths I tried weren't worthwhile; the y just did not seem to be 'it' for me.' (p32)
Cheryl points to why Sadhguru's Isha Yoga programmes and talks are different (and isn't that a claim made by practically all personal growth, self-help and spiritual resources these days?); an astonishing truth, that's hard for our swollen western egos to grasp - it is the guru himself who catalyses change and facilitates growth. Her book - written with a lot of honesty, humour and humility - takes us on her own, often rocky, path of self-discovery, and shows how it was through her final surrender to something and someone infinitely larger than herself, that she began to feel she was finding what she was looking for. I haven't read Sadhguru's other books yet, so I can't compare them to this one; however, I feel that this book will strongly resonate with western(ised) people on a journey of self-discovery, especially perhaps those who have given up reading yet more spiritual books, have grown weary and are ready to 'give up' their search. This is where Cheryl was when she met Sadhguru. I found this addressed by Sadhguru's words (p 167),
'If people tell you to drop the ego, it is not going to happen...instead...expand your energies...The ego is your shadow. It is not good or bad...Trying to get rid of your ego is much like trying to get rid of your shadow...If you tried to outrun your shadow, you would only become exhausted and frustrated... There is no such thing as living without ego. It is there, but if you are aware, the ego will serve you.'
There is so much wisdom in this book and in this being called Sadhguru;it's always hard to do justice with words and our saturated culture leaves us all stuffed with marketing hyperbole. Read this book and keep it close by thereafter.
And so, to finish up with, some of my favourite lines from this book,
'...if you become empty enough for grace to descend, the ultimate nature is not far away. It is here to be experienced. It is here to be realized. It is going beyond all dimensions of existence into the exalted state. It is not tomorrow; not another lifetime. It becomes a livng reality.'
Now there's a challenge for our times. Who's up for it?!
Peter Docherty (Gibraltar) July 8, 2008 What more can be said of this modern Mystic and Guru. Cheryl Simoni does her best to bring out the mystery and wisdom that emanates from this spiritual teacher of many. True to form, when he answers a question, another rises in your mind. Cheryl is no different and asks the kind of questions that arose in my mind. This great Being is so modern and unique but contains the wisdom of the ancients. He explains ancient wisdom in a way that modern man can relate to. He is great at disturbing the fixed mindsets that we all have. We like to think that we know, but he reveals to us that we do not know, which creates a longing and thirst for spiritual knowledge in us. That is his goal. He rightly explains to us that Yoga is an ancient technology that is suitable for use by all.
A brilliant book! It should be read by all.
Magical Midnights July 8, 2008 Midnights with the Mystic is a book that you will want to read again and again. It is structured around the down-to-earth spiritual questions of co-author Cheryl Simoni and this gives it an easy readability factor. But there is nothing 'easy' about the depth of the experience and wisdom that Sadhguru possesses when responding to the spiritual questions. He is at once both an ancient and contemporary revelation. As a reader I was left wanting to know more about this modern day guru and his life's work to help individuals and humanity find peace and blissful living.
Midnight with the mystics July 7, 2008 this book is one or the only best book that helps you see the simple ways of which is important in life . simplicity is beauty -how could one guide you through the way .there is nothing related to spirituality but just experiances of life that itself is spirituality by itself.i would suggest that the book is good and really very good.
