5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!   March 5, 2008
What an amazing book. I have no criticisms but i really wish i'd read the book before the film. The film followed the book very closely and i knew what was going to happen when reading it, although it still managed to shock me. It still had me gripped which shows it is a fantastic read.

5 out of 5 stars Wow - FANTASTIC   March 27, 2007
I also, like others it seems, was unable to sleep once starting this book. Just amazing. Such a gripping and emotionally charged story.

Definately go and read this book.....NOW!

5 out of 5 stars An emotional journey for the reader   March 3, 2007
I do not normally leave reviews on books, and it usually takes me around 14 days to finish a read of a book this size. However, I finished "Sleepers" within 48 hours of starting, with one night of only 3 hours sleep myself. An unbelievably gripping read which will take you on a an emotional roller coaster journey. I could not help but place myself in the position of the author, throughout the read, and I shut out all else around. An amazing story of some NY boys who's great friendship could never be broken. An incredible truth, which I understand has been challenged since written, and with many of the accounts described in the book, I hold out some hope that in fact many of the words are in fact untrue. - This is a must read for all!

I AM IN NO WAY A FAST READER BUT THIS BOOK (HONESTLY) TOOK ME 2 DAYS TO GET THROUGH FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. IT IS A COMPELLING STORY AND AT SOME PARTS OF THE BOOK YOU WISH IT WASN'T TRUE! THIS BOOK WOULD BE SUITED TO ANYONE.

As I'm dyslexic I'm a slow reader so hopefully this review will be of use to anyone in a similar position.

One of, if not the best book I have ever read!!! From start to finish this story is captivating.

I started the book wanting to know the harsh realities of the institutions of the day, but got so rapped up in Lorenzo Carcaterra's account of a child's life in sixties Hell's Kitchen; I really didn't want the story to move on from there.

The author's ability to bring situations and characters to life adds depth to this powerful story of survival and friendship. If Sleepers was a novel, I would commend the writer for the brilliant story line, but to think it is in fact a true story!

The film is excellent! The book is better!!!
