COOL July 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
A fantastic, un-put-downable book.
I was a little sceptic at first to be honest- was it all just hype? But then I realised ... the title, and the fact that it's written by 'anonymous', is not, as has been stated my many, a marketing ploy- the book was originally self published on the internet, so this is clearly not the case. I think it's actually written by a certain children's author who wanted to be taken seriously writing something else.
The first chapter is a fantastic opener- very mysterious. At first I thought it as a little cheesy in places- The Bourbon Kid?! Really?! But as I carried on reading, I felt this was almost some kind of comic relief. The characters are fun and the chapters endings are always real cliff hangers. There is some great humour in there too in places.
The only reason I have not given this book five stars is that it can be dated- Up until a certain point in the book I had no idea what era it was supposed to be set in, and I feel this added to the overall mystery. However, with various references to films, this was taken away. :(
The best word I can use to describe this book is 'cool'. Have a read and you'll know what I mean. Right, I'm off to buy the sequel...!
like marmite !!!! June 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Just finished the book so I thought I'd take a peek at what others are saying about it..... well its like Marmite - you either love it or hate it !!! Yes it is a mixture of genres but I found that quite clever; I haven't read many (or even any to be honest) cowboy/horror/murder mysteries all in one book! Didn't bother me that a lot of films were name checked as well - and I don't think as other readers did that they were ripping those films off but more paying homage to them. I would have given it 5 stars except for the ending which seemed a bit rushed - but hey Anon has left it wide open for a sequel !!! would be interesting to see more books by him/her
Brilliant fun June 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What a scream this book is! A friend lent it to me and kept nagging me to read it. It took me a few weeks before I actually started to read because it didn't look like my sort of thing. But my friend was spot on, once I'd started I couldn't put it down. There are numerous laugh out loud moments right through the book, but it's also peppered with some excessive violence and gory moments. However, even the violence is often played for laughs. The characters are all larger than life and there are plenty of them. Plotwise, there are several storylines running concurrently, but the overall theme is that of a murder mystery. The ending ties all the threads together brilliantly and there were some great twists. I loved this book and was sorry when it came to an end because (although it's no literary masterpiece) it was great fun, and the action was relentless right from the first page. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for something fun and very different.
Perhaps it's me.... June 11, 2008 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
The back cover says 'Do not read the book with no name'. This is good advice. I bought this on the strength of the reviews on Amazon and was really disappointed. Badly drawn, superficial characters and a plot that often seemed to be made up chapter by chapter were frequently irritating and often corny. Apparently 'self published on the internet' it badly needed an editor. As I say, perhaps it's me...
I read this, and survived! You should too... June 10, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Full marks for whoever thought up this Marketing ploy. Publish a book by an anonymous author and call it The Book with No Name, then tell people NOT to read it because the book brings death to anyone who reads it. Of course it's going to be a hugely successful novel, because people always want to do what they're told not to. An excellent piece of reverse psychology. Anyway, onto the review...
This was lent to me by a friend, with a heavy recommendation to read it. After reading the back of the book I was a little unsure, but decided to plough through it regardless. It's a difficult book to classify because it's rather a mish-mash of genres. It's got hitmen, crime bosses, vampires, religious men, cowardly bartenders and thieves abound. Where to start?? I advise at the beginning. Try to start the book without any conception of what it's going to be about, and just take it for what it is. But don't rush through because there are so many subplots and characters that it's quite easy to get lost.
Very briefly, the plot centres around a town called Santa Mondega, which the rest of the world appears to have forgotten. Or they're just ignoring it... the streets are violent and full of criminals. Oh, and it's reputed to be inhabited by the largest amount of vampires than anywhere else in the world, and there's a solar eclipse coming up. It's going to get bloody...
I don't want to say much more because it will give the game away. I'll finish by saying it's an incredibly clever book, very easy to read (providing you keep track of who's who!), and the subplots are woven together ingeniously. It wasn't at all what I was expecting but I'm glad I gave it the chance, and would definitely read another book by this author. Whoever he/she is!
I'd recommend this to anyone, whatever your preference. It's got such a multitude of genres that I think most people will enjoy it, and appreciate it for the masterpiece it is. Fantastic.
