5 out of 5 stars very impressive   June 6, 2008
I nicked this dvd off a friend who couldn't remember what had made her order it! The first thing I did after watching it (again!) was to tell her it was brilliant and she must get around to seeing it.
The twist(s) were fabulous and I love the way they've managed to keep the essence of the book going. You still get the story told from both protagonists point of view which helps to fill in the blanks and make you go 'ohhhhh... nice one.'
The movie is filmed beautifully with a lovely accompanying score. You believe you are in England of old and that the characters exist etc etc... thats all you can ask for in a movie, much less an adaptation! One of the few successful ones out there.

Having received the DVD from Amazon rental, I noted it was a BBC production, and couldn't remember ordering it (although obviously I had).So I was a bit predudiced thinking it would have low productions values etc.
But it was a relevation. Great story line, characters and acting with very convincing sets. I was entranced by this film-not many do that for me.Worth repeated viewings.

5 out of 5 stars 5 deserved stars for the genre which this is about!   July 28, 2007

I found this film absolutely first class from start to finish. I don't rate anything 5 stars unless it is exceptional in everything and I personally think this dramatisation from Sarah Waters novel is exactly that. The story is a beautiful one set in the London of about 1860's, combining lesbian romance with the day to day brutality of the period. The worlds of Sue,(Sally Hawkins) a "fingersmith" or pickpocket and that of heiress Maude,(Elaine Cassidy) a young lady collide with the help of fraudster Richard Rivers(Rupert Evans)and Mrs.Sucksby (Imelda Staunton)with a plan to cheat the heiress. There are several unexpected twists which I do not intend to give away.Superb, convincing characters and acting,a brilliant screenplay by Peter Ransley and director Aisling Walsh in on top of her game.

i think in order to really enjoy this film, you have to know or at least be accoustomed to Sarah Walters and her writing. The story line is highly entertaining and in some parts it drags too much , and you're just waiting for something to happen, but that is the way Sarah Waters writes, having read a previous book of her's titled Serena. The characters are well rounded, but at times too exaggerated. But she always has an unexpected twist that keeps you going, even until the end despite the fact that she takes a long time to get there. The film is worth seeing, but that only depends on how patient you are.

5 out of 5 stars Fingersmith.... love feels like love ... hate feels like hate   September 3, 2006

BBC adaptation of the novel by Sarah Waters..."Fingersmith"... Life is tough without money, especially in Dickensian London... Dark deeds lead to despicable dilemmas... Is love really only a luxury for the rich and free? Elaine Cassidy (Maud Lilly) and Sally Hawkins (Sue Trinder) both give fantastic performances as the leading ladies asking this question ..of each other..whilst Rupert Evans shines as the delightfully bad "Gentleman"... with great support from Imelda Staunton's "Mrs Sucksby", David Troughtons's "Mr Ibbs" and Charles Dance's "Uncle". I wasn't sure I could be led to care about characters able to hurt each other in this way.... but somehow.. i do care... and that's because of the quality of the performances... love feels like love....hate feels like hate...betrayal...confusion...well hopefully you get the picture and hopefully you will get this dvd and enjoy . (from the same stable as Tipping The Velvet) (Elaine Cassidy is Oh My God Gorgeous in this... sorry but i'm in her fan club and its only fair to declare... Hi Elaine :) xxx
