A truly excellent DVD. THAT damn good June 7, 2008
Triple H...The Game, The Cerebral Assassin, The King of Kings...so many titles, so many accolades to his credit. And he's also the guy who receives perhaps the most heat and criticism in WWE and the wrestling business itself.

The man is a magnet for controversy/backlash, whether it being part of the Clique, D-Generation X, the infamous Montreal Screwjob or falling in love/marrying Stephanie McMahon, thus becoming a rich and powerful member of the WWE empire.

But regardless of all of that, it's worth keeping in mind THIS. If he wasn't `that damn good', the odds are he wouldn't be where he is today, or even deserving of the success he's had. He's a great in-ring technician, a fantastic hardcore expert and (in my opinion) the greatest heel of all time. No other wrestling character has infuriated me as much as the Game, and whenever I've tuned into a really good wrestling storyline, I've paid to see the Cerebral Assassin get beat up every single time. That means Triple H IS `that damn good' at what he does, and that's why he can be called a legend.

The King of Kings is a 2-disc set. And the package is very nice indeed. There's a nice plastic sleeve covering a box that unfolds like any of the three-disc sets that WWE has produced. The graphics and pictures on the package are a beautiful touch, which adds to this high-quality DVD.

Like The Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The King of Kings is done in the hybrid format of career biography/match compilation show. It's a format that best works for a guy (like Austin) who has had several video/DVD releases over the years, allowing those who've missed out to get the best of both.

The documentation of how Triple H started out is excellent, and the Game himself provides a very engrossing narration of the best moments of his career. These include his debut as aristocratic snob Hunter Hearst Helmsley, his development as a ring-general, the controversial Clique Curtain Call that almost destroyed his professional career, his rise to the Intercontinental title and 1997 King of the Ring victory, his legendary association with Chyna, his transformation into Degenerate then The Game, his WWE Championship Era, the McMahon-Helmsley Era, his career-threatening knee injury and triumphant return, his successful feuds with Shawn Michaels and Batista (which catapulted the Animal to superstardom), his compelling rivalry with idol Ric Flair and finally helping to establish the next generation's biggest stars, John Cena and Edge.

Each of the career highlights leads to a match that best exemplifies them. Included here (to name only a few) are a squash against local jobber John Crystal, a fine Intercontinental title match against Marc Mero, his thrilling 2002 Royal Rumble victory and a 2-out-of-3 falls gimmick match for the World Heavyweight Championship against Shawn Michaels.

The real classics, however, consist of a truly excellent European Championship match against the late, great Owen Hart, an intense no-holds-barred slugfest against Stone Cold Steve Austin, the violently classic Hell In A Cell against Batista (the best in recent times), a very good Last Man Standing affair against Ric Flair, a cracking triple threat match with Edge and John Cena, and three bouts with Mick Foley.

I'd say the Foley bouts are the best on this DVD, because he and HHH had such an awesome feud over the years that helped elevate both of them to new heights and brought them huge success. The matches included here are the very good 1997 King of the Ring finals against Mankind, Triple H's WWE Championship victory over Mankind in 1999, and the emotional, thrilling Hell in a Cell against Cactus Jack at No Way Out 2000.

To avoid repeating the listings of other superstar DVDs, the matches that have been selected here are ones that haven't been overly re-released, which is fine and admirable. But The King of Kings does suffer from the lack of a third-disc. Much more of Triple H's life story could've been told, and there are so many more diamonds that should've been included here, such as the Game's brutal chain match against Kane from Judgement Day 2001, some excellent matches against Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle (though I can understand why, given the Benoit tragedy and Angle's defection to TNA), matches against Chris Jericho, Randy Orton...and doubtless many more.

But the thing I REALLY don't understand, is why none of Triple H's classic battles against the Rock are on this set. Both guys had arguably their best matches against one another, their feud turned both of them into stars and legends and was one of the highlights of the Attitude Era. So why there isn't a two-out-of-three falls, ladder, strap, Iron Man, Intercontinental Title, or WWE Championship match featuring these two here is absolutely baffling. What's even MORE baffling is that the Rock isn't even mentioned during the documentary sections, and this overlooking REALLY hurts the quality as a result.

Extras-wise, there could've been so much more. Even though there's some nice Easter Eggs that are hidden in the menus and Triple H's first professional match (featuring commentary from the Game and J.R.), which is a good bout, there's also a REALLY stupid Hog Pen match against Henry O. Godwinn. Why THIS is on the set instead of career angles, extra interviews, vignettes etc, I really don't understand.

Despite these faults, Triple H: The King of Kings remains an excellent release. The presentation format is cleverly devised, the match selection is mostly classic and the life-story/career sections provide a great wrestling tale. Which can only be expected given the man that's being documented here. While The King of Kings could've been truly perfect, it nonetheless remains very high in quality. You certainly won't regret buying this and it should be viewed as being very good value for your money.

As I stated on my "That Damn Good" DVD review...backstage politics aside, Triple H is one of the best performers in the industry today. He's for the in-ring presence of a modern day Harley Race with the charisma & diversity of Ric Flair. It's been a long time (over 5 years) since they dropped a DVD SOLEY on The Game & it will take the same format that Austin's & Hogan's latest releases are where they'll have his matches with comments in between on various incidents such as getting started in the business, time in WCW, Chyna, the curtain call, King Of The Ring including a funny story about the "crown" itself, the evolution (no pun intended) of his character, his quad injury, Shawn's return, Ric Flair, Batista, Edge & John Cena amongst other things.

Matches include: vs. John Crystal - This was his RAW debut & nothing special past that.
RAW May 1995

vs. WWE Intercontinental Champion Marc Mero - Triple H's first title reign began here as the whole plan involving the "mole" Mr. Perfect came to play as Perfect (who had problems with HHH and befriended Mero) turned on Mero to help HHH win the championship.
RAW Oct. 1996

King of the Ring Final Match vs. Mankind - This was the match that put him on the map & started his elevation into becoming who we know today. This was the most aggressive you've seen Triple H up to that time as he did things to Foley you haven't seen before like the pedigree through the announce table, Chyna breaking the scepter over his back, and Triple H not stopping the attack after he won the match.

WWE European Championship Match vs. Owen Hart - The stipulation here was that Chyna was going to be handcuffed to Commissioner Sgt. Slaughter at ringside during the match. Triple H & Owen Hart worked a real good match here with the Chyna factor not really playing a fact until the end.

vs. WWE Champion Mankind - Mankind was inserted into the Austin/Triple H SummerSlam match & walked away the champion. This was the night after when Triple H captured his first of many World Championships.

No Holds Barred WWE Championship Match vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin - This match always gets heavily overshadowed by their later encounters as they went hard in the ring & just had an out of control brawl out the ring include Austin "lowering the boom" on HHH. The ending involving The Rock doesn't take away from the match itself & was supposed to set up the Survivor Series match that wasn't meant to be due to Austin's injury.
No Mercy 1999

Career vs. WWE Title Hell in a Cell Match vs. Cactus Jack - Mick Foley's original retirement match as it was career vs. title here. After their classic Rumble street fight, this match didn't top it but did its job in letting Foley end his career with a bang. The story was about Foley promising to come off the cage onto Triple H so he had the cage locked so they couldn't get out but eventually found a way out after he missed hitting Triple H with the steel steps. The ending involving the flaming "Barbie" & Cactus on top the cell was something.
No Way Out 2000

30- Man Royal Rumble Match - They show everything after Triple H entered since he wasn't involved in the entire Rumble unlike how it was on Flair & HBK's DVD sets. Hunter's time in the Rumble involved a confrontation with Steve Austin, a comedic moment involving The Hurricane, the return of Mr. Perfect, and the final moments between him & Kurt Angle.

3 Stages Of Hell Match vs. World Heavyweight Champion Shawn Michaels - The story here was will we see the "humble" Shawn Michaels or "Heartbreak Kid?" Just a side note but watch before the match gets started as Ric Flair kept getting into it with the referee to the point where he gets shoved on his ass...it's funny. The street fight was brutal as they didn't do a lot of weapons spots but just instead beat the hell out of each other & occasionally use weapons such as a flaming barbed wire board. The cage match was around 10 mins. with the only memorable spot being HBK's dive onto Triple H though a table. The ladder match wasn't the caliber of HBK's previous ladder matches but it was still good considering the circumstances with the finish of HBK falling off the ladder though loads of tables being a highlight to the point where WWE continued to use that footage in their "Don't try this at home" advertisement before any WWE home video.
Armageddon 2002

Hell In The Cell vs. World Heavyweight Champion Batista - Their third, last, and best encounter. Many hardcore weapons (barbed wire chairs for example) were used. Triple H bleeds buckets once again as Batista wins with a spinebuster on top of the ring steps.
Vengeance 2005

Last Man Standing Match vs. Ric Flair - Triple H brought out the best in Flair (at this day & age) in their feud. Triple H was ruthless while Flair wasn't giving up until HHH had to use the sledgehammer to put Flair down. I enjoyed their cage match better than this but I think they put this one on here since Triple H won the match here.

1st Professional Match as Terra Ryzing vs. Flying Tony Roy - The match itself was nothing special but pretty funny to see the babyfaced Triple H with the mullet-like hairstyle back then. The commentary with Jim Ross & Triple H is the real highlight here.

In the end, this collection is giving me exactly what I want from a DVD set. None of these matches are on other DVD sets (besides the PPV anthologies), they brought back the alternative commentary, highlight special moments in his career, and the match quality is there. The only thing I can think of that is missing is a match with The Rock since that was one of the biggest feuds from the attitude era. In the end, I recommend.

BOW DOWN TO THE KING !..................... May 3, 2008
A selection of his great matches, Hunter never disappoints. Personally I should have liked more commentary from the man himself bit I suspect he would not say too much I suspect, whilst he is management after all, and until he retires.............As if he ever will.
Hunter is totally devoted to his craft and is bombarded by the sour grapes of back stage politics from the many super egos who have much to be jealous of. Ask Goldberg or Batista, not to mention many others, who will have nothing to say but good about him.
Anyway, enough of singing HHHs praises, this is a fabulous couple of discs, but why not three, like Taker or Cena?
If you are a HHH fan, you will love it.
Very good value for money. I got mine from the USA, so perhaps it will be more expensive in the UK but it was well worth it.
