Amazon.co.uk Review
The world domination of Pokemon begets their first theatrical movie. This adventure is a little more complex and dark than the popular TV series, but kids who live for the show will gobble up this film and ask for seconds. Those baffled by the show's popularity, however, will see nothing better here. Mewtwo, a new type of Pokemon designed by scientists to be the ultimate fighter, decides he wants to rule the world and challenges all the great Pokemasters to battle. Of course, our intrepid heroes Ash, Misty and Brock are there to tangle with Mewtwo and spoil his devilish schemes. The film is a tad more emotional than the show (that is, there is some emotion), with Ash sacrificing himself to defend his beloved Pikachu.

Would you really expect the makers of this worldwide phenomenon to radically change its winning formula? The feature is only 55-minutes long, but there's also a 20-minute short, "Pikachu's Vacation." For the Pokemon novice, this escapade will truly baffle: the narrated tale has virtually no dialogue except Pokemon speaking their names (Bulbasaur, for instance, will only express emotion by using variations of his name: "Bulba, Bulba-SAUR!"). --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars An epic of Poke-Proportions   July 2, 2008

In the beginning, God created man. And He saw that it was good. Then Man created Pokemon. And it too, was good.

This is the first, and in my opinion, definitive, movie that features the Japanese creations, Pokemon. A craze that took the whole world by storm back in the late 90's, and is still going strong today. You only have to look at the number of Pokemon movies that exist now to see that. But there can only be one number one. And this is it. Without a doubt. I can honestly say that even now, eight years on, this movie still looks as good as new. The chemistry between Ash and Pikachu is as high as it ever was, and the characters all work well together, the old guard of Ash, Misty and Brock providing the majority of the lines.

The storyline too is highly thought-out, featuring a battle between an ancient and powerful pokemon, Mew, and a clone made from his DNA but engineered to be all-powerful, Mewtwo. Every directorial decision made concerning this movie was a good one, and the storyline is weighty and at times, touching, without ever being earnest, something which even Hollywood blockbusters struggle to do. The climax of this movie will make some people cry, no doubt, especially girls and squares, but that just goes to show how strong the writing is.

If you are just getting into Pokemon, or you are only familiar with 3rd generation Pokemon or higher, this movie should definitely be on your wish list, as it is the definitive example of how to make a great Pokemon movie. If I could score it higher than 5, believe me I would.

I havent seen this film for ages and yet it's still good.
The Pokemon short nearly brought me to tears when Charizard got its head stuck, as Charizard is my all time favourite Pokemon. I rented it out again and when Ash was hit by Mewtwo and Mew, the sight of Pikachu crying - I had to stop myself crying as well.
It features Pokemon you rarely see in the TV series - Gyarados for example. You also see Mew the rarest Pokemon ever.
The only bad thing Pokemon (its a small thing) is that I think Ash cares too much about Pikachu.
Even so, its still a great movie so I reckon you buy it - at any age!

4 out of 5 stars the essential dvd for any pokemon fan to begin with.   July 23, 2005

this is a great dvd. there is a commentary and loads of good extras. plus, it introduces ash brock misty and team rocket quite well. this is the ultimate pokemon showdown between a crazed phsychic pokemon called mewtwo, clone of mew, hellbent on taking over the world. plus the mini movie pikachus vacation is great and just adds an extra sense of excitement to the dvd. if you love pokemon then you are going to love this. Buy now if you like pokemon. you get it new for 6.00 off this website OR off an amazon user selling it for around two pounds cheaper.

3 out of 5 stars If Ash had died, this film would be 5 starts...   October 9, 2004

When this film was first released i watched it over and over. It was great. I never muched liked the pokemon tv series, too much Pikachu and his annoying and stupid trainer, Ash. The problem is that we don't see enough of the power house pokemon doing battle with one another. I long for there to be a pokemon movie following the sucess of an older trainer as he/she battles her way through the pokemon league...

this movie has a slow start, but once Ash and his friends encounter Mewtwo and the other trainers things start to heat up. The animation is beautiful in this film, perhaps the best japanese animation work i've ever seen! You also get to see some cool power house pokemon that you rarly see in the tv series; Gyarados (one of my personal faves), Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur and Mewtwo to name a few...

The re-vamped theme tune to the first battle at the start of the movie is great. It's a shame Ash's puny pokes' magically beat the crap out of their awesome foes.

My fave pokemon film, a bit mushy at times... The onyl thing that could make this film better is if Ash had actually died.
