5 out of 5 stars Brilliant   August 7, 2008
As long time fan of mecha based anime, I was hugely impressed by this series. First up is the story line, a clever mix of long term story arcs as well as good one off episodes, the mix in these is well developed using both humour as well as some fairly intense moments. A particular highlight is the three part story "when the wind blows", it acheives an emotional depth and intensity that many anime wish it had. It would be fair to say that the series acheived the comedic heights of Nadesico (the series not the film) with the fight scenes rivalling the likes of Gasaraki or Gundam.

This leads on to the characters themselves - one merit of this series is the way it exposes the whole child warrior character inherent to mecha anime. Whilst in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji couldn't cope with his role and internalised his problems, Full Metal Panic does the opposite the main protagonist Sousuke has to engage with real life despite his soldier instincts - in a way he is almost what you imagine Heero from Gundam wing would have really been like at school. The humour is well handled and it's mundane everyday environment serves as a good foil to the more open and spectacular combat scenes.

Importantly for an anime the artwork is excellent and is at the height of traditional mecha design, the fights are well coreographed and the characters all well drawn. The music isn't the best you'll ever hear - but then again you're not really watching it for that!!!

If you are looking for a good series to watch, then I really recommend this one especially if you have previously liked Gundam Wing, Nadesico, Eva, Robotech.

4 out of 5 stars Panic? nah do not worry this series will entertain for sure   July 20, 2008
Anime is truly a genre of its own, but it should not to be mistaken as a linear or uniform genre. Fullmetal Panic is an all out anime with the distinct contrast between the more serious action related and the more humorous and everyday life orientated. The contrast is well told due to the story's plot. Kaname Chidori seems to be the average school girl, but there is more to her than meets the eye. Sagara Sousuke including his team from Mithril are set out to protect her because she is of great importance.
Due to this Sagara is transferred to Kaname's school and has to deal with an environment that is quite unfamiliar to him since he is mostly used to be in the battlefield and lacks social abilities. It is Sagara's interaction with the school environment and his duty of protecting Chidori that creates the very charming and engaging contrast that is in the series. It has enough mystique to engage the viever and enough humour and interesting details that leaves a feeling of hungering for more. It is definetely a series worth watching and a good series to start of with for persons who consider Manga and/or anime as a breath of fresh air.
Full Metal also has some aesthetically beautiful scenery especially in the first episode, but it is not overambitious in any way and it has a very clean and simple look to it. The intro and ending themes are also very catchy and are both in the typical Japanese rock/pop genre. The instrumental music supports the different scenes as well.
Maybe it is a bit of a risk to buy the complete collection at first, but if one wants to give it a chance then either buy Mission 01 or try to look it up at youtube. It cannot be promised that the series falls in one's favor, but this certainly is a part of what Manga and Anime is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Another fantastic anime from studio Gonzo   July 15, 2008

Full Metal panic is a japanese anime TV series that is sure to appeal to most anime fans. The story sees Sousuke Sagara, a war hardened veteran of the anti terrorist organisation 'Mithril' being given his toughest mission yet. To guard seemingly normal school girl Kaname Chidori as she carries out her everyday life. Kaname Chidori is the target of a group of terrorists who want to kidnap her as they believe she contains special powers. So the basic premise of these 24 episodes is Mithril's struggle against the terrorist organisation while protecting the girl.

The pacing and style of this anime is really good as there will be several episodes of intense action and mecha battles, followed by stand alone comedy episodes following Sousuke's misadventures while he is trying to fit in as an undercover student at school. I like the way that they have done this, because it gives us a bit of a break after the action packed episodes, as well as some diversity in the series, while at the same time, creating some nice characterisation.

One of full metal panic's main strengths is it's entertaining and likeable charcacters such as Sousuke's comrades who happen to be a hopeless womaniser and a feisty sergent. Furthermore, our two protagonists, Sousuke and Kaname are an excellent duo, as Kaname often gets stressed out with Sousukes's mishaps, leading to hilarious results.

However, despite the comedy found here, there is still plenty of heart as you genuinely begin to care about all these characters. These excellent characters are portrayed brilliantly by their english voice actors (I didn't watch the Japanese).

Prolific voice actors found here are Chris Patton (Guyver, Gantz, Full Metal Alchemist,)
Luci Christian (Puni Puni Poemy, Rumbling Hearts, Guyver)
and Vic Mignogna (Full Metal Alchemist, The Wallflower, Dragon ball Z).

The artwork in this series is amazing as it was created by the acclaimed studio Gonzo, who worked on projects such as Afro Samurai, Gantz and Hellsing. The music also very nice, especially the opning theme, which is incredibly catchy.

This set contains 7 discs, but unfortunately there are very few special features. Just the usual Trailers, textless openings and endings and some production art.

Overall, this is an excellent anime that will fly by. There is something for all anime fans here; plenty of action, great characters, laugh out loud comedy and some fan service and an excellent story. More-over this series can be quite cliff-hangery, making it hard to lose interest.
If you enjoy this series then you should check out the two sequel series'. There is Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, and Full Metal Panic the Second Raid.

5 out of 5 stars Great series!   April 13, 2008

I've never really liked mecha anime, they're just a bit tacky to me, especially when most of the time they look like something out of power rangers. This series though is actually pretty good, as the mechs (called Arm Slaves) in this are cool. The action is obviously sometimes over the top (this is anime), but it's just done better than Gundam and the like. In my opinion away.
The series starts off quite funny, when Sauske tries acting like a high school student so he can protect Kaname. As the series goes on it does get more serious, like most anime series do. Good story, great animation, and likeable characters, that all have their funny moments. The music isn't really to my taste but not many anime do have music I actually like, it's usually the typical Japanese cheese rock in most of them.
Overall an awesome series, it's just a joy to sit through and offers some great entertainment. I was torn between giving this 4 or 5 stars, but I think it's good enough to get 5. Highly recommended, and not just for mecha fans!

4 out of 5 stars Great show! -expected better special features....   April 8, 2008

If you like full metla panic you will enyjoy these dvds, duh!

The anime is about a mervenary group called mithril who send a group to gaurd a high school girl (undercover).

Without ruining the plot too much:
The main character, souske, has to gaurd the heronine, kenami, with out making it obviouse he is acting as her body gaurd. He doesn't manage to do that, by the way.

The series is more comedy than mech to begin with, although as the plot line progresses you get to see more of the super cool arms slaves, and it gets grittier, more interesting less funny.

The Characters are all really likable, especailly the main characters Souske and Kenami. A personal high point is when souske rams his teacher down the stairs because he has identified her as a threat to kenami's safety!

Although the series is one of my faves, the special features leave a lot to be desired. There is nothing of great interest on the dvds appart from the actual episodes.

Having said that one special thing about these dvds is that at the very begining of each dvd a fmp character will read out one of their versions of the copywrite law, they're all really funny especailly souske's... you'll see what I mean!
