4 out of 5 stars Civil War Soap!   November 12, 2006
7 out of 8 found this review helpful

Like Dynasty in crinolines, this wonderful drama develops at the perfect pace to involve the viewers in the lives of the characters long before the horrors of the civil war in the US begin. Two friends from military academy are on opposite sides once war breaks out - but in the beginning there is a believable friendship which results in family members meeting and marrying to form strong bonds. Foes from the academy reappear in war time and scheming southern belle Ashton can give Scarlett O'Hara a run for her money. Too many famous faces to mention but Kirsty Alley shines as abolishinist Virgillia - obsessed to the point of blindness by her belief in "the cause".

This is a fantastic drama of the type that used to grace our TV screens years ago. Well acted, good scripts and tremendous detail to battle re-enactment - which sensibly does not rely on gore for effect but rather maintains the dilemma of former friends and neighbours now at war with each other - this DVD deserves a place in every home collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great and absorbing story   June 6, 2006

I watched some episodes of North & South years ago on TV, and decided to catch up now it is on DVD. I found it to be totally absorbing. While it does not have the special effects of modern productions, the story I found to be totally absorbing, and moving: two people, attached by a real friendnship, one where they are friends because they like each other and have an understanding of their different views. Great stuff, all the more absorbing as it covers well an interesting period in US history.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent historic saga!   May 8, 2006

I enjoyed North & South as much today as I did back when it was first shown on TV back in the 80s. A lot of effort and planning went into this epic saga and if you're not bothered by long-term watching (after all it's 12x 1.5h episodes I believe) then you're in for a treat.

There is also a third season which features the events of the 3rd book (Heaven & Hell). It was filmed a little later than one and two but when will this be released on DVD??!

2 out of 5 stars The cover displays languages but isn´t in the DVD   March 11, 2006

The Spanish Language and Subtitle appears clearly in the Covers but isn´t in the DVDs. Is a great error by part of Warner.

I send several mails to the Warner customer support and they don´t respond to me

It´s shameful.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the first   February 7, 2006

Everything about this mini series screems quality, from the memorable music score, the amazing costumes, the great cast, and the fabulously captivating story of war, frienship, principles, love, history and politics. Everything you could ever want in a drama! And Patrick Swayzee at his best! The characters will engross you, the plot lines are detailed and provoking. I have never seen a better piece of television, or film for that matter!

This second book is where the story gets even better with the turmoil of the civil war, and the turmoil back home with Justin bent on keeping Madeline, and Ashton plotting with the evil Bent. George and Orry fight on oposite sides and their friendship suffers.
