Amazon.co.uk Review
Throughout Curb Your Enthusiasm's fifth season, HBO's master of passive-aggression went in search of his roots. In the sixth, Larry returns to his old tricks--to the relief of fans who felt the show was losing its way. As usual, most scenarios revolve around problems unique to neurotic millionaires. Larry's voice of reason, wife Cheryl (Cheryl Hines), continues to save him from himself (when she can). This time, the 10-episode arc turns to Roots when the Davids take in the Blacks, a family of African-American hurricane evacuees, including Loretta (Vivica A. Fox) and her brother, Leon (an uproariously profane J.B. Smoove). Naturally, "L.D." offends other groups along the way, like an Asian gentleman ("The Anonymous Donor"), a chemotherapy patient ("The Lefty Call"), a deaf woman ("The Rat Dog"), and tennis-player-turned-comedian John McEnroe, a group unto himself ("The Freak Book"). During the year, Larry also tangles with an X-rated dessert, an unsympathetic senator (Rep. Barbara Boxer as herself), an inebriated chauffeur (Toby Huss), the infinite superiority of Ted Danson, and the usual games of oneupmanship with Jeff Greene (Jeff Garlin), Richard Lewis (himself) and Marty Funkhouser (Bob "Super Dave" Einstein, brother of director Albert Brooks).

Since Curb Your Enthusiasm takes its inspiration from David's real life, the big news arrives when Cheryl, a character based on environmental activist Laurie David, walks out on him. Then their friends pick sides. Thereafter, things really start to go downhill, resulting in some of Larry's funniest faux pas ever--until R&B vocalist John Legend steps in to save the day. Not literally, but his soulful singing sets the scene for the surprisingly sweet finale.--Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars Not as strong as previous seasons.   June 19, 2008
LD is my comedy hero but I have to admit although Curb is extremely watchable,I found some of season 6 a bit of a struggle.Sometimes a bit too crude in places for my taste and I almost got to the stage where I began to think that this was a season too far.It does pick up towards the end and I very much enjoyed the series final episode. LD has set some very high standards but this was a bit below par for me.Slightly pricey for such a short season as well.I do hope LD does some more Curb.

3 out of 5 stars Good season, but nowhere near as gd as 1 + 2,   June 15, 2008

I have to give this 3 stars, i feel i may have given it one more star, but it almost feels like seinfeld in a way because seinfeld quality dipped in the final few seasons. I almost wet my pants though seeing the introduction of the blacks, who are hilarious.
Being a diehard fan of curb, I have to be more critical as I've watched it from the start, I mean the people saying it is the best season is ridiculous as they must not have seen the first 3 to say something like that.
I feel the quality has dipped since series 2 for one reason, they are masterpieces, and the style of the show back then was cutting edge and was unlike anything else on tv, basically it was more realistic.
The whole style of the show now is made for a wider audience now i believe, but it is still very funny in a different way, series 6 is better than any other comedy on tv, because larry david is a complete comedy genius. I love the "amonymous donor" episode as his chemistry with leon is soo hilarious and his dislike for ted danson is priceless.
overall a must buy for a curb fan, and i feel 1 more season is enough as seinfeld dragged to long, btw i'd love seinfeld to be in an episode in the next season.

5 out of 5 stars Lets all pray for a seventh series!   June 12, 2008

The introduction of the blacks has given curb a fresh basis for new story-lines. " J.D Smooth" who plays Leon is perfectly cast and his banter with larry provides the funniest moments. Seriously one of the best comedy series ever larry davids writing is absolute genius. I really really hope there is one last series before curb is laid to rest as the larry and cheryl situation isn't fully resolved.

4 out of 5 stars Still life in an old dog   May 29, 2008

This is probably the weakest season but it's still head and shoulders above virtually every other comedy out there.

3 out of 5 stars Its NOT the best yet.   May 22, 2008

The other reviewers are singing the praises of this series and I just dont see it. It is definately the least interesting to watch - repeat wise. Once you see it, you will pick up the box 2 months from now - check the episode titles, remember them and think...naaaa, and put it back.

My issue is: that the formula is too familiar now and to be honest I think the narrative is a touch lazy at times - the soggy 50 dollar note, the ice cream incident. It just doesnt swing it for me. It's not as clever and convoluted.

I also think our favourite characters - Richard, Geoff and the geeky extras we met every episode just don't play a big enough part or have as good lines. For example Jeff and Larry chat while Jeff waters the plants, Jeff's wife comes in and the patter is just weak - Jeff doesnt have a single funny line. Wasted air time for me. Bring back the blind guy. It's almost as if the series has become part of the way of things that its originality has actually become the US sitcom norm. It's all expected. Apart from clear comic observations from David, that are just 'ok', I think his heart isn't in this series, and fully expect it to be the last. However, I won't spoil the ending - but there is definately a set up for David to return with all his insecureties reestablished as he tries to get his old lovelife.

All the actors are very comfortable, they have found themselves. The rythmn of the patter is now typical and lacks the awkwardness it had originally. You feel pandered to a little for example the scene with funkhauser and Larry and the 50 dollar note again : the actor playing Funkhauser seems to know he is being funny...his character seems to expect Larry's objections - as does the viewer and so the lines lose their punch.

Sad as it is, I think the series peaked in season 5 and this is simply taking the cash.

I would still buy it though.
