Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk review
A cheerful, energetic, and completely entertaining movie, The Bank Job follows some small-time hoods who think they've lucked into a big-time opportunity when they learn a bank's security system will be temporarily suspended--little suspecting that they're being manipulated by government agents for their own ends. The result is that the movie doubles its pleasures: While the robbery itself has the usual suspense of a heist film, when the robbery is over the hoods find themselves being hunted by the police, the government, and brutal criminal kingpins who were storing dangerous information in a safety deposit box. The Bank Job won't win any awards, but it's enormously fun. Director Roger Donaldson (No Way Out, Species) propels the action along with vigour, zippy editing (with perfect clarity among multiple story-lines) and various colourful characters. Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter), as the leader of the bank robbers, successfully steps away from his usual bone-crunching roles to a more human presence. The rest of the cast--including Saffron Burrows (Deep Blue Sea), Keeley Hawes (Tipping the Velvet), David Suchet (Poirot), and many faces familiar from British film and television--give their characters the right degree of personality and flavour without getting fussy or detracting from the headlong rush of the story. A little sex, a lot of action, a sly sense of humour, and a twisty plot. If more movies had these basic pleasures, the world would be a happier place. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars First rate Brit flick   July 18, 2008
This is a very entertaining story behind some dodgy types deciding that a bank holds cash that should be theirs. When they manage to pull it off - with plenty of good tension - they find compromising material of a dynamite nature and their lives get even more complex.

This is a great thriller and a superb night in. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping, Thrilling - Entertaining!!!   July 18, 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie - I found it hugely entertaining. The fact that this is based upon a true story made it all the more entertaining and the humour was well placed to provide a nice balance as opposed to similar movies that end up like watching a documentary. I have to admit the tension was so great at certain points in the film, I almost had to left the room I was so engrossed and caught up in the tension!

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good thriller - and in particular an excellent performance from Jason Satham!

5 out of 5 stars We're the Sweeney...You're nicked!   July 17, 2008
Actually this film does not involve the Sweeney Metropolitan Police Flying Squad) but it does have Jason Statham doing a really good impersonation of Grant Mitchell from Eastenders.

Personally I think this film is a complementary piece of work to a film of a few years ago, Scandal, as both movies give a very convincing portrayal of Britain in the 1960's and '70's. with the sleazy concoction of political power, the Establishment, the secret services and the filtering down through to the lowest criminal classes.

Purists amy argue that some of the scenes in the film are anarchronistic but one must accept that given the tremendous changes which have transformed London in the last fifty years, some artistic licence is inevitable.

The film reminds me in a sense of the Long Good Friday, a superb movie with Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren and a short appearance from a young Piers Brosnan in that the vital essence of Britain's capital. Also every aspect of this film is excellent, plot, screenplay, cinematography, acting, credibility everything. The language is a tad worse than in your average movie but it certainly seems appropriate.

I have no hestitation in recommending this film to a discerning adult audience.

2 out of 5 stars exciting..... but lazy and perverted   July 16, 2008
This film is an interesting, funny, clever movie which had many moments of truly entertaining drama. However, I felt this could only be said for a certain amount of the film, as the majority of it seemed to rely on naked women, and nothing else. I understand at times in the movie certain parts were relevant to emphasise the obsession of sex in the 70's and the corruption of trusted people (like the scenes in the brothel). But I felt it followed too many other sleazy and lazy fims at the moment, by filling up the film with breasts, as for me it made the film blend in with the all to common lazy idea that naked women will excite everyone and fill up minutes. This ruined it for me, as it didn't need to rely on nudity and keep focusing on it as it had an incredible plot and charisma to it, and I would have enjoyed it far more if at had spent less time on sex and more on the other interesting aspects of the 70's and the story.

5 out of 5 stars One for your collection!   July 5, 2008

The story has been outlined here several times so I go straight on to my opinion...
I watched this film last night and must say I haven't been that entertained like this in a long time. There are tense moments, it's funny, in one part a little gruesome (whatever your imagination is) and you will not know how it ends until it ends. The actors are great, the dialogue is intelligent and brilliantly British. The film left nothing to wish for - I had sweaty hands.

Definitely 5 stars from me and I just bought the DVD for my picky dad's birthday. I know he'll love it, too.
