For those who found 2004's Aliens vs. Predator too lightweight in the gore-and-guns department, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem offers a marked improvement in both categories, as well as a respectable amount of rumbles between the title extraterrestrials. Set in the 21st century (which predates the story to all of the Alien features), Requiem sends a crippled Predator ship crashing to Earth in a small Colorado town; unbeknownst to the locals, the craft is loaded with H.R. Giger's insectoid monsters, which make quick work of most of the population. As the human cast is slowly whittled to a few hardy (if unmemorable) souls, a Predator warrior also arrives to complicate matters and do battle with the Aliens, as well as a ferocious Alien-Predator hybrid (dubbed a Predalien by the sci-fi and horror press).

Visual-effects designers and music-video helmers The Strause Brothers (who make their feature directorial debut here) keep the action on frantic throughout, which is wise, since the dialogue and characters are threadbare at best; that should matter little to teenage male viewers, who are inarguably the film's key audience. Fans of the Alien franchise, however, may find the offhanded nod to the series' mythology given during the finale its sole saving grace. --Paul Gaita, Amazon.com

Utter rubbish!!! August 3, 2008

Dire beyond belief. The original 20 year old Alien series make this shoddy effort look like a low-budget B-movie. Terrible script, acting and story line. I have just spent 7 on this today and was unable to watch it beyond 3/4 through. I will be attempting to return this for a full refund tomorrow. Avoid at all cost.

Is this TV or Radio? July 31, 2008
I seem to be one of the rare people who actually liked the last AvP effort, so I had reasonably high hopes for this new instalment... At least until I attempted watching it.

As you would expect with either an Alien or a Predator film, there's lots of running and screaming, along with the aliens doing what they do best, skulking around in the shadows.

The film picks up immediately after the last AvP film ended, and takes place back on present day Earth. Given that the Alien stories were all set in the distant future, it seems a little odd that Earth now suddenly has a history with the Aliens, but that's just a little glitch that is easy enough to overlook for the sake of a good film franchise.

Now we get to the main problem of the film, lighting.

The first 10-15 minutes of the film are fine, being set in daylight, after that it goes down hill fast.

I'm sure the low lighting looked incredibly atmospheric during the filming, but you have to wonder how they ever continued after they looked back over the footage on a screen. Most of the film you could be forgiven for thinking you're listening to the radio as the television screen remains blank, bar the occasional close up of the Predator, who seems to manage to show up even in the poor lighting they used.

Other than that, there's the occasional moment when somebody finds a torch or a lantern, which as you'd expect quickly translates into "I'm over here, come eat me" to the aliens (did I mention the plot isn't exactly rocket science?)...

As you can imagine, the torch or lantern seems to get eaten along with the helpless victim, so the extra light and picture on screen doesn't last very long.

From what I could hear of the film, had there been a picture to go with the sound, I'd probably have given 3 stars, but with so little picture, it's lucky I can't give it half a star

at first i saugh this film in the movies and i hated it ,to dark and all
the bad reviews as in all other ones you can read here ,but when i baught
the dvd and rewatched it,it was a totally different and much better experience ,the special edition comes much more vieuwable (certainly in the dark passages,town black out,sewer , swim pool etc ) the film does not
come over as in the theatre as a kids film ,but as an equal good as expected for alien and predator fans film
personally i find the final battle between the mutant and predator somewhat to short and sometimes confusing ,this fight should be corrected
in a future director's cut

Hi-budget rubbish July 28, 2008
I had slightly higher expectations for AVP2, than the first AVP movie (which was almost fair according to my standards), after having talked about this one with an acquaintance.

However, I'm very disappointed. This piece of garbage makes the first one look like one of "those classics" you remember fondly. If 20th Century Fox wanted to utterly soil the reputation of the Alien and Predator movies, which shone in their own ways, THIS is the way to do it.

I could proceed to write a lengthy and in-depth review of this .... thing, but there is no need to, because on further consideration, there IS no depth to this. Want the plot explained, fast and hard? Here goes: "Teenage slasher movie with sci-fi monsters thrown in", oh and American military for good measure. That's it - all you need to know. Really.

Go ahead and vote me down for writing an unhelpful review (if you do so, also be so kind to obligate yourself to actually go and buying this pathetic excuse for a movie, and watch it - *all* of it. Then let it dawn on you that you just wasted your money and 90 proverbial minutes of your life you won't get back. THEN, you can come and write a review here, sharing your anguish and loathing.)

Is there a reason for watching this movie, at all? Yes, actually there is. Or, rather, three.

1) A cute blond chick.
2) A genuinely disgusting scene in the maternity ward of the hospital, which makes my minds eye spring back to the first time i saw Alien on TV.
3) Yet another example of how low the american movie industry will sink for a quick buck, even if they have to bloodlet their grandparents in the process.

Points 1 and 2 each earn the move 1/2 a star.

NO! July 28, 2008
Have you seen Alien, Aliens and Predator? If so this will look familiar. Bits from these movies and a few bits from some of the lesser sequels are strung together to make an action flick, which whilst having the same creatures lacks any originality. So we get a recreation of 'Newt' from Aliens a Ripley like strong female character and all manor of other rip-offs from the other films in both series. In my view Alien vs Predator (2004) was a decent attempt to keep a franchise alive. Not brilliant but certainly worth watching. This isn't worth watching.

If you haven't seen the original films, or your have only seen Alien vs Predator you will have no understanding of my criticisms. If so go back to the beginning and watch 'Alien' (1979) alone in the dark for one of the scariest horror/Sci-fi films ever made. Then watch 'Aliens' (1986) to see the best war movie in space ever made. Finally watch 'Predator' (1987), which is not in the same class as Alien/Aliens but is still a high class action/Sci-fi movie.

When you have done that you should then watch 'Requiem' and all will be revealed (tripe).
