5 out of 5 stars Elemental fun   June 11, 2007

I originally caught this show while I was channel surfing on a Saturday morning and I was hooked strait away. The show follows the Avatar, a powerful reincarnated being, travel the world learning how to manipulate (bend) the elements to defeat the warlike Fire Nation and return balance to the world. Not only must Aang find people willing to tutor him in the various elemental powers but he is also being chased by the disgraced prince Zuko. The four episodes of this volume give a good representation of the series, introducing the characters well and giving a good account of the world and history that the show is set in. The series has some great action and a good, if not terribly original plot, should be enjoyable by both adults and children. As a side note, although not strictly anime the show is clearly heavily influenced by it and anime fans will most probably enjoy Avatar as well.

5 out of 5 stars Who says cartoons are only for kids?   May 19, 2007

Ok, well let me start by saying that I'm 20 and I absolutely love this show to bits. That's right, I'm a mature(ish), socially active, employed, complete with a life, friends, dates and family adult - and I love this cartoon.

It's a shame that many people judge a show before they've actually taken the time to watch it. A cartoon can quickly and wrongly be labelled as a 'kids show,' and that just isn't fair.
Avatar is wonderful. The plot is consistently good and moves along at a nice speed, the animation is fantastic and the characters are well-developed and easy to relate to which really gets the viewer behind their quest.

Read the basic plot and yes, I'll admit, it doesn't sound terribly original what with the slightly reluctant hero, the strong female presence (whoop Katara!) and the comic relief dude who is always the one to get hit by something. But I promise watch an episode and you will be enlightend.

Avatar just makes me feel happy. It's like watching a Disney film - instant child-like glee :D Such is the way with Avatar. It takes you through a whirlwind of emotions but in the end you're smiling and wanting to watch the next episode.
So give it a shot and enjoy yourself. Age is not an issue with this wonderful little show :) (Oh and if you do find you really like it, you could always grab yourself a cheap multi-regional DVD player and get the American Season 1 boxset. It's a better deal in the end and will most likely take forever to be released in the UK.)

5 out of 5 stars Too good to be a kids show it does have Pirates in it   December 10, 2006

Given I accidently caught an episode channel surfing I was hooked. Curiously it was an American cartoon which as a rule for people with the attention span of a sea sponge. Avatar instead is an intelligent and well thought story and of course has Momo well you have to wait for the third episode. The story is about Aang the last airbender there are four nations each of which can bend a specific element. For the last century the fire nation have been at war with the other three nations well actually two as the Air nomads were killed off in the first strike and the war has been going on since with the Fire nation making in roads into the other nations this the first book starting with Water in Book 2 incidently if you get to see the episode Tales of Ba Sing Se check out Momo dancing . Avatar is both a series for children and adults with a believable story line and jokes which both adults and children will enjoy.
The characters do develop admittedly the Fire nation protagonist is a bit slow but uncle Iroh is a hoot and was voices by the sadly missed Mako.

The episodes are
1: The boy in the iceberg
2: The avatar returns
3: The southern airtemple - 1st Momo appearance
4: The warrior of Kyoshi

There is 20 episodes in the series and I will not destroy your enjoyment but yes Zhou gets his chips in the end and there's Pirates in it too
