Amazon.co.uk Review The Coen brothers make their finest thriller since Fargo with a restrained adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel. Not that there aren't moments of intense violence, but No Country for Old Men is their quietest, most existential film yet. In this modern-day Western, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is a Vietnam veteran who needs a break. One morning while hunting antelope, he spies several trucks surrounded by dead bodies (both human and canine). In examining the site, he finds a case filled with $2 million. Moss takes it with him, tells his wife (Kelly Macdonald) he's going away for awhile, and hits the road until he can determine his next move. On the way from El Paso to Mexico, he discovers he's being followed by ex-special ops agent Chigurh (an eerily calm Javier Bardem). Chigurh's weapon of choice is a cattle gun, and he uses it on everyone who gets in his way--or loses a coin toss (as far as he's concerned, bad luck is grounds for death). Just as Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), a World War II veteran, is on Moss's trail, Chigurh's former colleague, Wells (Woody Harrelson), is on his. For most of the movie, Moss remains one step ahead of his nemesis. Both men are clever and resourceful--except Moss has a conscious, Chigurh does not (he is, as McCarthy puts it, "a prophet of destruction"). At times, the film plays like an old horror movie, with Chigurh as its lumbering Frankenstein monster. Like the taciturn terminator, No Country for Old Men doesn't move quickly, but the tension never dissipates. This minimalist masterwork represents Joel and Ethan Coen and their entire cast, particularly Brolin and Jones, at the peak of their powers. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

A Masterpiece of Modern Cinema July 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The first of the 3 Neo Westerns of 2007 is a dark and brutal tribute to both the Western and thriller. I should mention now that this film is for a more sophisticated film audience, if you go expecting the usual trailer tangent tactics seen in the latest garbage spewing from Hollywood these days such as Hulk, Jumper or Transformers (To name but a few) then, the chances are, you will be sadly disappointed, this is a film with so much more to it than a standard chase/thriller film, but then again the Coen's have always been gifted and do not disappoint here. The gritty and authentic performances from Jones, Brolin and Bardem carry the film fluidly forward alongside the excellent direction, solidly quiet soundtrack and epic sweeping cinematography, reminiscent of Peckinpah and Leone. All the themes of violence, greed, and modernity link these 3 character's final story threads together to the blissfully brief and minimalist ending. It is marvelously tied together and as I've said earlier, the less sophisticated audience will not appreciate it, accusing it of 'copping out,' but it truly is tied together with the final monologue from Tommy Lee Jones. Pure Cinematic Genius. A must see for film buffs, a definite warning to morons to keep to the blockbusters.
Overrated Drivel July 18, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I don't understand any of the acclaim this film has received. Emperor's new clothes is worth saying.
This is the most dismal movie I have ever seen. Two of the worst thing that can happen in a film are in this dvd; sheer violence with reasons never explained and an awful abrupt ending.
It's also a yawn fest. The pace is so slow even a snail would tell it to hurry up. Pressing fast forward may raise the enjoyment - slightly.
Do not waste your money buying this overrated drivel. You have been warned.
Terrific movie and deserved Oscar winner July 18, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a gripping and vastly entertaining film. There is a lot of intrigue and death, and the whole cast shines completely in a fantastic story. The violence is harshly effective, and while the ending is unusual overall this is a very superior piece of film making. Wonderful stuff.
Good.........but not great July 15, 2008 After hearing about all the great reviews and seeing the Oscars bestowed upon this film, I was realy looking forward to watching this film. The first two thirds were excellent; the acting from Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin was very good, there was plenty of tension and the Texas landscapes were beautifully shot, really adding to the whole atmosphere of the film.
And then the last 30 minutes arrived and everything went wrong.
Without wishing to spoil things, the climax that you anticipate throughout the whole film never happens. Instead we finish with Tommy Lee Jones sitting in a hut and rambling on about....well, I don't know what seeing as I'd kinda lost interest at that point and didn't really care. And the other frustrating thing was that his character never seemed to develop and was always on the periphery of things without having any real impact on the story. I'v given this review 3 stars due to the first two thirds being so strong and the last half hour being so weak. Some people may find the ending to it really deep and profound. I just found it to be a massive let down.
