The Best New BBQ/Grill Cookbook 2002 July 6, 2004 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
"The Barbecue Book" by Jim Marks was acclaimed "The Best New BBQ/Grill Cookbook 2002" by the National Barbecue Association of America. This book is beautifully illustrated and contains a wealth of recipes ranging, as the subtitle "Burgers to Banquets" suggests, from the simple to the exotic. However, I found it was more than just another recipe book. For me it has served as a complete introduction to the art of barbecueing. There is a very useful section on different cooking techniques at the beginning of the book, but the most informative part, I felt, was the equipment review at the end. The one gripe I would have is the paucity of truly vegetarian dishes for those guests who do not eat fish or meat. However, many of the recipes can be "adapted" as necessary. Overall I found the book to be an excellent introduction for a barbecue neophyte like myself and I am sure some of the more complex dishes will present a challenge to those who see themselves as experts in the art of al fresco cookery.
The Smokey Grail of Barbecuing June 2, 2003 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Jim Marks – what a revelation – having ham-fisted my way through barbecuing for years on a variety of charcoal and lately gas devices I have discovered the Smokey Grail of outdoor cooking – the international award winning ‘Burgers to Banquets’ by Mr Barbecue aka Jim. This book makes sense, from cover to cover the advice, tips and recipes work a treat. From the basics preparing the food, barbecue and cooking area to the finer arts of smoke cooking and grilling meat, fish and desserts this book is perfect. It’s unpretentious and helps even the most inept chef to succeed with outdoor cooking. The recipes are easy to follow with everyday ingredients and step-by-step advice. Its obvious barbecuing can be taken well beyond my current ability and I look forward to using Jims book to show me how.
