5 out of 5 stars The antidote to parenting gurus   August 18, 2006

This would make a great present for dads and dads-to-be. The point is that it's not about HOW to bring up your children - it's one dad's view of the world since he had kids, full of hilarious observations about labour, sleep, mess, chaos, nurseries, parties, baby food and all the other paraphernalia. (The anecdotes actually add a sweet personal touch, and the surveys, as far as I can tell, seem to be real.) There's also loads of really useful info in here - book and website recommendations too. It's hilarious, touching, informative and fun.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor   April 19, 2006

If you're looking for a light-hearted book to provide an insight into becoming a father, this not the book. Dadlands advertises itself as a "guide", but provides little substance. Chapters solely containing anecdotes, pretend surveys and long lists of "amusing" thoughts provide a small measure of entertainment at the start of the book, but soon begin to irritate.
You may find this book laugh-out-loud funny, I didn't, but it's no guide for Dads.

5 out of 5 stars A much appreciated gift!   January 6, 2006

Obviously new parents don't have ooodles of time to write reviews for books, so I thought I would write this on behalf of my brother. I purchased the book for him as a gift a couple of months ago as his wife was pregnant with their first baby. He devoured it cover to cover and pronounced it both 'really useful' and 'hilarious'. Having looked at it myself, I can say that this is a readable and accessible guide for men facing fatherhood for the first time.
It is not condescending towards men, nor is it difficult or demanding. It's a perfect present to give to a friend or relative, husband or partner, who is soon to become a dad and is either dubious or excited about the possibility. I am also sure that there would be many new mothers who would be grateful if the man in their life reads this book.
