Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is well worth the money   June 3, 2008
Those of you looking for a definitive guide to WIng Chun or a back-up to your own study and practice will not be disappointed by this book. Grand Master Kwok does not hide or hold anything back in his lessons and it is the same with his writings. Clear concise explanations accompanied by well photographed demonstrations means you can consign all those other books you may have bought containing funny drawings of people in various poses firmly in the bin. This book contains step by step instruction for each of the three handforms with a full explanation for each. There are also drills and techniques for you to practice along with a glossary of terminology and history of Yip Man Wing Chun. I'll be using this book for a long long time.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching, Preserving, Mastering   May 15, 2008

Written with the express purpose of preserving the teachings of the late great Grandmaster Ip Man, Grandmaster Samuel Kwok has set down a lifetime's exhaustive study into Wing Chun with this work. He thoroughly photographs, details, and explains the finer applications of all 3 hand forms - perfect for the rank beginner to the experienced student needing to smooth his techniques.
Probably the best stand-in when attending a class is impossible, and a faultess first step for a complete novice interested in learning -but confused by the vast choice- of which martial art to study. Wing Chun is not about competing in tournaments or push-ups on knuckles, it's pure and practical self-protection jealously guarded for centuries, preserved and taught by modern masters like Samuel Kwok.
This is not all the book contains, though. History of the art and authentic lineage coupled with the teaching coda outlined by Ip Man begin this large book, with the wooden dummy, weapons, chi sao training, conditioning the human weapon, and a photo album. Here are luminaries in the art past and present, Grandmaster Kwok working with the sons of Ip Man passing on their father's art, and demonstrations in Futshan, the cultural home of Wing Chun, add a richness to this huge volume.
With forthcoming volumes on the dummy, pole and swords, do not miss the chance to begin building your definitive library.
