| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review "A deck is an extension of your living space. It allows you to enjoy fresh air and the out of doors in comfort and safety. Built correctly, a deck is strong, weatherproof and will last for many years." So begins Building Decks part of the Black and Decker Home Improvement series which is designed to give you the skills and knowledge to design, plan and finish your deck. The illustrations of decks in American homes complete with jacuzzi and swimming pool look awe (and perhaps fear) inspiring to the humble DIY-er hankering for that simple patio affect. This daunting feeling lasts only a few pages, the book quickly gets down to the basics of decking, explaining and illustrating the parts of the deck, decking patterns, timber types, hardware and fasteners and underlying concrete structure in very plain language and with plenty of clear illustrations. This is followed by advice on planning the design of your deck and site drawings--obviously an area not to be underestimated, finishing with a materials checklist for you to complete before the trip to the timber yard. The main section of the book deals with the construction itself, here guidelines are considered and easy to follow and include helpful tips - the writers have obviously fallen prey to a few mistakes in their time too! More advanced elements such as building stairs and special effects such as an island deck are included for the more ambitious. The final word of this straightforward guide covers finishing, maintenance and repair and as in the rest of this excellent handbook the writing is clear and comprehensive. Building Decks is a foolproof guide, suitable for both beginner and expert alike to create some functional and long lasting outdoor areas. --Ron Barker

Disappointing December 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can not agree with the other reviews who liked this book. Apart from being very american, it did not address drainage, or wood treatment in a manner the helped me. I read it cover to cover the day it arrived (didn't take long) and never opened it again.
Excellent book......... July 3, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
A comprehensive, and well written book, first chapter gives photos and advice on various types of beautiful decks. Step by step guide then follows on building your deck. Includes deck plans in the last chapter Clearly written for the DIYer.
The only book you will need to build a professional Deck October 20, 2000 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
We used this book to create our deck which now has pride of place in our garden. The instructions were concise and easily understood without too much technical jargon. We have never attempted anything quite on this scale in the past, but I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone considering building a deck.
An great book for a first time deck builder. July 30, 1999 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book is probably the only one you need. It shows you how to start, with easy to understand step by step pictures. My first deck is coming along with very few problems, and it's all due to what I learnt from this book. It has everything from ideas to technical specifications; e.g. How far apart to space beams etc. Buy it and get building, and let me know how you get on.
Courage for the beginning builder. March 30, 1999 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This book provides complete, concise, clear, step-by-step instructions for deck building. Great photos clarify text and make the project seem exciting. I bought two books on decks and returned the other...this one had everything I needed.
