4 out of 5 stars Great book but not for beginners   June 2, 2008
I got this book for Xmas and was delighted with the cute amigurumi patterns. So far I have made the bunny-in-a-dress (only my bunny is a boy and isn't wearing a dress), a bag and one of the monkeys. I'd never attempted amigurumi before but the patterns are very clearly written and let's face it, amigurumi are basically made up of single crochet so it's hard to go wrong! As a total newbie to amigurumi, I would probably have liked a little more info on which rounds to attach arms and legs to etc but I suppose the beauty of amigurumi is that each one is different! My bunny was the first one I made and he did come out a little wonky but I think he's all the cuter for it.

The photos in the book are lovely and as the amigurumi are all so cute, you'll find it hard to know which one to start with.

The second half of the book does have some lovely accessories but I get the feeling they padded it out a bit with too many scarves and hats! The books isn't suitable for beginners to crochet as instructions for the basics aren't included so it seems odd to include so many scarves when presumably most people who use this book are more than capable of making a pretty scarf on their own. That said, it does give you some nice ideas and inspiration and the patterns are easy to adapt to your own taste.

Overall, definitely worth adding to your collection if you have already mastered basic crochet. Some useful tips on making and assembling amigurumi which I've found lacking in other books.

4 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by its cover ...   October 5, 2007

Despite the cover illustration, the amigurumi animals actually make up less than half the content of this book, both in terms of number of patterns and actual pages. The second part of the book is then taken up by lots of patterns for hats which, to the untrained eye (i.e. mine), look fairly similar, plus some scarves, gloves and other accessories. Fair enough, the summary here does point out that it includes accessories alongside the animals, but just be aware that the animals are in the minority.

The amigurumi section is actually very good with clear instructions using both written patterns and illustrated charts. It also has a lot of useful and transferable tips about making amigurumi animals in general. The overall design of the book is also very attractive with cute illustrations throughout. I just have that slight disappointment that it's not as amigurumi-centric as the cover implies.
